We currently have a small multifuel stove of an unknown make that isn't staying in overnight. We bank it up and close vents (I have been reading lots of advice) but all that happens is that we get sauna like heat a couple of hours later followed by the fire going out. We have tried many different types of coal with varying success but have never managed to keep it going past 4am.
As we intend to be living on our boat long term we are planning to replace the stove and would appreciate comments/experience as to which stove is suitable for a 40 foot narrowboat that will stay in overnight.
Thanks for the help.

Are the vents all tight? If they are closing properly then you shouldn't get the sauna like heat you are describing, in fact if the vents are fully closed then that should eventually extinguish the fire without burning the coal.

The stove is old and the controls are non existent any more, which is the problem. Time to upgrade and hopefully have a comfortable winter next year.

If you post some photos maybe we could identify your stove. Would a new door give you control? Are the vents part of the door?

Boatman stove from northern fabrications its made of steel so wont fall to bits, its made in this country so you are supporting our industry, and Eddie the builer is a great guy who cares about his customers. Apart from that it does work very well and will stay in overnight

Some stoves don't have rope seals on the doors. If the doors and door surrounds are high quality well designed castings then they usually seal pretty well but if they are a lower quality casting and no rope is used there will probably be gaps. I don't really like rope door seals but they do compensate well for less well made stoves and give more control.
One of my stoves is a dutch cooking stove. It has no rope seals but the door surrounds have a sort of tapered lip cast into them so as the door is closed it locks onto the taper forming a seal. Older Rayburns were like this as well. It works and stays in for up to 18 hours. The firebox is about the same size as a villager Heron - not a particularly large fire.

Sorry for the delay but here is a pic of the stove in question. I am liking the sound of the boatman though. Attachments:

Not sure what that is. Seems quite big. Villager Puffin is pretty good as a small stove. I've got one on one of my boats and it stays in for about 15 hours easily on Brazier smokeless coal.

Important to keep an eye on the door seals and replace then if they start falling apart (main door and ash door)
It might be that is the only problem with your stove - maybe it just needs new seals ?

Sorry I can't help on the actual stove front but if you ARE in mind for a budget replacement, I can heartily recommend one of these. www.gr8fires.co.uk/gbs-mariner-4-kw-multi-fuel-stoveIt's made by arada and for it's size, I STILL can't believe how well it does. I can call in at the boat about 3pm... light it (using mainly wood to get some quick heat in) and about an hour later half fill it with slow burning opoids. I let them get under way and in about 15 mins close the bottom vent to about 20% and top to maybe 25% and leave it to it. When I get back to the boat - usually about 23 hours later everything has burned away nicely but there are still a few red hot embers which with careful use, can be coaxed back into life with some kindling. When I'm ON the boat though, I make it up about 9/10 pm doing the same and when I get up about 6, it's still very hot, the boat nice and warm and it will rapidly leap back into life when I open the vents fully and chuck on a log. I can't vouch vouch for how long it will last but it "feels" like good quality for the money. Mark.

Why can't you get someone to make 'controls' for your old stove? We have a little VALOR 'Willow' stove which came with the boat, quite happy with it, although the baffle is baffling - I read about it but it's impractical to use, so all goes straight up to warm the crows' nests. For anyone near Halifax there's a stove shop 5 minutes' walk from the station.
