Thanks a lot for starting this topic Kris, I can't get enough of seeing photos of the L & L Shortboats, the very first Shortboat I ever saw in my life was the "Arthur" moored in Paris in '72 or '73, but I didn't know John Liley at the time.
I hope that this topic will motivate Roy in posting more of his treasures for us to enjoy.
Peter.

Kris
Hope your refit on A 41 is going well. Yes I am still well thank you after my cancer op. One story I don't think I told you was the day A41 and A40 came across the Mersey loaded, behind one of Rea's Tugs who the B. I's had to use. They were dropped off on the Liverpool side by Brocklebank Dock. A Dock Gate man told them Collingwood Dock would be locking in an hour earlier. So in their wisdom they attempted to punch up the wall but were making no headway. A41 tried drifting off the wall to find a bit of slacker water, but to no avail. She came back alongside A40 with an almighty crack. Fortunately in my Dad's words 'Bonnyday popped up', he was a Richard Abels tug Captain and always kept a weather eye out for the local Burscough boatmen. So he came to the rescue and got hold of them. I recently sent this story to the current owner of A40 and he sent me a pictiure of her on dock on the continent. There was an over plate on the port side near the forward beam, which could be covering the impact area . Best Regards Roy

I shared a couple of locks with it on the Thames as it was on the way up to Thames and Kennet marina to be craned out and road transported back home. Really nice boat. I was in Molesey lock with it when the gear linkage became disconnected and the skipper accelerated thinking it was in reverse but it was still in ahead gear. He hit the lock gates hard enough to make me very pleased that I was behind him !! I like the L&L boats but could not own one as it would be a wreck in 60 seconds.

In the John Liley days (years) the "Arthur" didn't look like the ad on Apolloduck, as she has changed owner a couple of times since, and had the hold made with full headroom over the whole lenght.
In John's ownership only a part of the hold was high enough to have standing headroom in the saloon/kitchen aera.
Here are a few lines John wrote about his "Arthur" recently : www.bargeluciole.com/john-liley-articles-2

Kris it's good to hear your okay Roy. A41's refit is moving forward, but it takes time I'm not rich so I have to earn a bit spend a bit. But I don't mind as long as I get some jobs done every year, it'll get done. One of the reasons I wanted to keep a copy of your photos. Is that they show clearly the wider side decks of the B&I boats. As I'd like to reinstall wide side decks on A41 it's interesting to me. Although I understand A41 had decks the same as The river class boats particularly Lune. If it's okay with you Roy I'll copy some f your stories from cwdf to here so there's a record here?

The guy who bought Arthur must like them, he owns Wye now as well. Arthur is back to its original name Mersey and looking really well.

In John Liley's book "France-the quiet way" there's a lot written about "Arthur", starting with him buying her from a good friend, a man who did a lot for the traffic on the Inland Waterways Michael Streat, and then the preparation work on her, the Channel crossing and their adventures with "Arthur" in France.
A book worth reading for everyone that's interested in the Leeds & Liverpool Shortboats.
Peter.

Kris As far as I am aware A41 still had a wider deck than Canal Transport Boats. The only difference I could glean from Yarwood's records at the Chester Records Offices was that A41 and A42 were 1/2 inch or in modern terms say about 12mm narrower than the other 5 B.I's. This was the reason A42 crew Watty (R. Watkinson) and Little Tom (Tom Spencer) requested could they run lighter with a load of 48 tons instead of 50, as they were dragging the bottom more. How long it took for the other crews to find out I don't know, but all eventually only carried 48 tons. Roy

That's interesting Roy, I can't remember who it was who told me. But I'd heard that A41 whilst in the yard was due to be Lune. But got changed before delivery and the next boat out became lune. I can't for the life of me remember who told me that. I've heard so many stories about the old boats and their crews.

There's a nice old L&L boat round here (East London/River Lea). I think its A36. 2 cylinder Gardner in it.

Thats very interesting as we all thought both A36 and A42 were scrappped. There is also we think the A38 on the Grand Union some where de enginned.

Kris. If my memory is right I told you the A41 Lune story, but never mentioned A41 had narrower decks. I think you put two and two together. Regards Roy
