I just bought one on ebay. Looks interesting. Stainless steel mini washing machine with a heating option. Heating uses 2.5kw so I will probably put hot water in instead. rotator motor uses 270w so not a problem. Looking forward to having a play with it. URL: pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=152445955934Eta as I am someone who tends to have very dirty clothes (scruffy fecker) it looks like the right sort of thing for me.

Looks like a bargain to me, all stainless steel instead of the plastic ones, this one should last forever and maybe if you're lucky even longer.

I'm intrigued about boiling clothes. I don't have 2.5kw of 240v on this boat but I can moor beside my other boat just to try it on mains electric. I'm wondering if this is a way to get very dirty jeans clean.

Some friends of mine in the US had a boiling washing machine, very greasy- filthy dirty workcloths came out of it perfectly clean, almost unbelievable.

I was a single parent when my daughter was a baby, had a hot point twin tub. Boil the Terry nappies, spin water back into tub, then do sheets, then the dirty jeans etc. Very economical.
And before the coprophilliacs arrive, the nappies were soaked in nappy stuff and rinsed first. So no shit, sherlock.

One way I've found is to 'double wash' by resetting the dial after the first drain so the main wash is repeated, and the first run is just like an extended prewash. Takes longer and needs more water and powder but could save on fuel if using a genny. There's always £5 Primark jeans for emergencies.

I don't subscribe to the modern cool, or even worse, cold washing that we are urged to do to save energy. It simply doesn't get the unavoidable oils from skin out of the clothes. For generations people have used hot water to do laundry for a reason. I think your dirty jeans will be just fine in the hottest water you have available, especially if it is too hot to put your hands into. If you want/need to wash more than one load in the same water, consider getting some tongs to get the items out though.
I love this - very retro, and akin to the copper that my mother used before we had a washing machine.

It seems to have a pump so it will empty itself so I suppose I do a wash with hot water (from calorifier+kettle) then drain then rinse with cold. If boiling turns out to work I might get a 3kw frame genset just to do the boiling process but I suspect very hot will probably be ok. I quite like the idea of actually boiling the clothes but I bet it would make the boat smell rough !!

When I was a lad of about 10 (that was over 60 years ago) everybody but everybody had a copper, heated by a gas ring underneath, they were a much sought after appliance. There were even houses were I lived that had a brick outhouse which contained a copper built into a brick and concrete worktop, the ancestor of the utility room. Everything got boiled and the bonus was that they were great for boiling Xmas puddings in. Phil

My Hermes man brought me the clothes boiler this morning. Tested it on the boat with mains lectric. Put jeans in it. Filled with warm water put heating element on, raised temp till it was steaming a bit but not bubbling. Drop of ecover liquid. Agitator on for 4 minutes. Agitator rolls the clothes around beautifully. Its gravity drain so I put it in the bath. Holy shit I didn't know jeans could hold so much dirt !!! Rinsed twice. Now in tumble drier. Uses loads of water but for first rinse could be canal water. Labour intensive as well but for a weekly wash it will do. Its going on my other boat with only 700w of mains electric (enough for the agitator) so will need a 3kw genny for rhe boiler or just put calorifier water in. And hang dry. It works. Been wearing those jeans all the time (daytime) for a couple of weeks since last wash and I do get things dirty I need a spinner now or a mangle. Modifications I would consider: Float switch and 12v solenoid in lid for automatic filling. I think its great.

Keep going, you're reinventing an automatic washing machine in pieces. Why not just buy on of those? Mine works great, put in dirty clothes, put powder in a little drawer, switch on and wait, hey presto! Clean clothes spun dry.

This did occur to me Could even put a pump in to empty it. I actually took out an automatic full size washing machine from this boat because 1. It took up too much room and was inappropriate as I am a dedicated soap dodger* 2. I hate washing machines. I really like this thing you can actually BOIL clothes in it *I do realise things sometimes get too dirty so a cleaning option can be useful. My jeans came out cleaner than the other half's automatic washing machine gets them.

And you probably washed hotter too, that's cheating. My auto is small and hides in a cupboard you wouldn't guess could fit one in. It has roses and castles and everything to disguise it. My ex's previous wouldn't let her have a vacuum cleaner lol. I fink you a bit like he.

Yes but this thing boils clothes.
Its almost as good as those amps that go up to eleven and as bargemast said it will last forever and quite possibly longer.
As it happens last time I washed these jeans was in the other half's auto machine with nothing else in it and I ran a 90 degree wash.
There was a proper oil stain (got some diesel on my leg when doing something with a generator) which did not go but after today's treatment it has gone.
So there.
