I don't know anyone in your neck of the woods. It would depend on the layout of your boat weither it was worth the hassle or not. For me half the attraction of boats is running an old engine. If I was to have a narrow boat it would have to have a nice old engine in its own engine room.

I would avoid the JD3 if I were you. It is much coarser and louder than the older BD3, and sounds a bit TOO tracktory. IMHO. (I have a BD3)

A JD is not a vintage engine or anything like it. Its an abortion.

Logged in again quickly to say that what would be clever would be to see here a list of engines used on narrowboats and canalboats in general, and other inland waterways craft. How many can there be? Let's start an alphabetical list? Here's what I know (the list can be copied and extended):
Beta (or is this another name for Isuzu?) Bukh - Made in Denmark marine engines Gardner (lawnmower engines?) Isuzu (Click and Clack of the Car Talk radio show say they made their fortune repairing Isuzus!) Lister Perkins (good reputation) Volvo (owned by the Chinese)(parts made by 5-year-old children in sweat shops) Yamaha

Definately the best of the modern engines, I know a few people with hire boats who swear by them.

I fitted one into my brother's boat in place of a tired Stuart Tuner P55, home marinised - made the manifolds and plumbed in a heat exchanger. Absolute gem of a thing, came out if an ex council lawn tractor, uses no oil and sips diesel.

Mine wasnt even marinised the old one expired at 11000 hours because somebody turned the valve on the oil pump out system and it emptied its sump!! [ex share boat] New engine when I bought her, superb and thats why the world uses them
