I just went in this morning to inquire about the blacking of my 70ft boat, strange people that you meet in business, the woman was helpful enough but I found her other half a bit of a strange one,a bit like that film Deliverance. It always seems with boats that you are more often than not underwhelmed by both the service and the people providing it. Is it a South East thing ? I don't know. I am looking at a base cost of almost £1000 pounds, meeting the owner just dented my enthusiasm and reminded me of a conversation with a female boater who upon stopping for diesel was also less than impressed. We shall see.

I think these people recognise they have a captive market and charge accordingly for what is a menial task

Check out CWDF...
Nick No-All has the definitive answer today ..................
But seriously, try the "Midlands".
There seems to be a huge difference in price - as much as £5 per foot.

Lovely idea, Chagall
But we'd all have to do the Ribble Link to get to you - and then we'd probably want to stay...........
Sadly, don't think the co-operative movement has many supporters these days - two boat loads who were miffed to be behind watched me single hand up a flight this morning and wished me well, doing sweet nothing, but hoping the rest were set for me.
ROLL ON OCTOBER....................

Sorry
Chagall's paintbrush is potentially capable of so very much!
I just look forward to the end of the "silly season" and hoping October gets quieter again............
So love the winter - antisocial me - you are too altruistic but I applaud your efforts and would be more than happy to lend a hand if I can.
Not feeling terribly charitable after paying for a slip and hardstanding, wielding an angle grinder, sander and paintbrushes for a week to have the fourth boat in as many days crash, scrape and grind against all my best efforts laugh, turn their backs or hurl abuse because I had the audacity to moor where they wanted to.
Sorry...........
sounds like a CWDF rant been reading that too long moving on in the morning

That sounds expensive, nearly £15 a foot. Mine's going in next month, £9 a foot.

I used to do mine for free on the tidal Thames, there are two places, up and down stream of Brentford, I have heard they are charging for it now though.

How comes I've missed this thread? What do you mean 'South-East' cds? I thought you were in the Milton Keynes area? That's 'Oop North' to Essex-Herts-borderers! We're supposed to blacking our boat this July and I think the dry dock is 300 squids, then we need the paint - 100? and new anodes + welding them on = 100? And loan of pressure washer - 50? 550 total?
Doing it ourselves. I bet it's horrible! But, doing it ourselves for the first time we'll get to see what is what - and know it's been done PROPERLY. I thought we'd go to see the dry dock first so that we're prepared, for as soon as we enter the clock starts ticking - 4 days - 96 hours.
"Wouldn't it be cool if there was some sort of cooperative whereby we help each other do the job" - there is indeed, Chagall, it's called "What are you doing between 21-25 July? Bring a scraper to the dry dock! And a paintbrush!"
"I applaud your efforts and would be more than happy to lend a hand if I can." - metanoia bring a scraper too, we'll let you do the mussels first!
"scrape and grind against all my best efforts laugh, turn their backs or hurl abuse" - this is why we keep an axe on board. A crowbar is also useful for removing their teeth.
Here's a Youtube clip about blacking:
