The US has just switched on a £550 million missile shield in Romania this afternoon that it sees as vital in defending itself and Europe from attacks by Rogue States, but which the Kremlin says is aimed at blunting its own nuclear arsenal. The Ballistic Missile Defence Site is capable of shooting down rockets from countries such as Iran who could one day target european cities. As long as Iran continues to develop and deploy Ballistic Missiles the US will work with its allies to defend NATO said the American Defence Secretary. It seems to be very uncertain times we are living in,when you think back to peristroika and Gorbachev I had hoped we had seen the back of all that Cold War Stuff but no,and all these countries rich with oil wealth and adhering to religious ideology that has nothing in common with Western Values, you wonder.

Can it really shoot down incoming missiles? I thought the Americans tried that in the Pacific Ocean a few years ago and it didn't work.
My answer would be this: Iran chucks ONE nuclear missile and The West retaliates by throwing ONE THOUSAND at Iran and making a new crater in the Earth's surface.
North Korea and Iran are just jokes to keep us entertained. The big players are China, Russia (+ all the ex-USSR countries that are forced to still be loyal to Russia) and the rich Arabian countries. The USA shows their might but they are heavily in debt to Saudi Arabia. Does the USA indeed have any power these days?
How tedious of Russia to wheel out another Kremlin spokesman with the same old blah blah blah. So predictable. It's a bit like Ken Livingstone giving us a lecture on newts.
The future is difficult to predict. We may have ideas as to what could happen - but people keep dying and younger people take their place, and they may have other desires. My theory is that Russia is doing the Second World War stunt that they were so good at then... withdrawing and waiting - and then springing like an uncaged tiger, venting all of their fury and winning hands down. The Americans only came in as they saw that Russia was going to swallow the whole of Europe - and then probably Africa as well. Russia has untapped wealth in the form of minerals and metals, coal and gas and oil. Fresh water too.
It's all a bit silly as we all live on this tiny rock in the middle of nowhere, and we should really be putting all our brains and efforts into working out what's really best for this planet and the human race, and all the other species.
Energy from oil and coal, and fresh clean water is what's really important. Do a study on these and see where the money is flowing - that's the only way you can get a grip on the real situation.
Back to our local parish - how many Iranian narrowboaters are there? Any Iranians on Thunderboat?

Can it really shoot down incoming missiles? I thought the Americans tried that in the Pacific Ocean a few years ago and it didn't work. That was when Reagan was president you demented old fox! I guess time goes by fast when you're being naughty. Israel has a similar shoot-em-out-of-the-sky system and it has been effective against incoming rockets. Most modern US Navy ships are protected with systems that take out incoming rockets. The real clue as to why this is happening is the $780 million dollar price tag. Some proud member(s) of the Military Industrial Complex just made a small fortune on that system. And the initial price tag is just the beginning. It's hard to track down exact figures, but the US spends about $1 Billion per year on Israel's various missile defense systems. By the time you add up the annual costs of security, training, maintenance, upgrades and so-on, it's easy to see that a system like this is the gift that keeps on giving as far as defense contractors are concerned.
