Cue Pink Floyd.
As many of you may realise, I'm a bit of a pub philosopher. I thought I'd share a few thoughts I'd written down with you about the concept of money. Please feel free to pull it apart, I'm always happy to learn. Here goes..
We were probably taught at school that money was invented because it got around the problems of barter. Apparently we can't live without it, although every other creature on this planet seems to manage just fine without it.
Barter only fails because of greed and lack of trust. Rather than use the principle of unconditional giving, it relies on expecting something back in return.
In theory everyone could wake up in the morning and 'carry on' doing what they are good at and we would still enjoy the fruit of each other's labour without any money changing hands.
Unfortunately those who have nothing else to offer but money, would have a problem.
In reality though, we all have the ability to give back,. Spending time caring for our children, elderly, friends, neighbours for example. In fact there are many roles which currently have no, or very little financial reward yet offer so much.
The main problem is that there will always be those who simply don't put in what they take out (greed again).
So we are stuck with the monetary system which allows one human being to be 'worth' millions of times more than another. A world where the few can control everyone.else without having to look into their eyes.

Money has its evils of course. But various large scale social experiments in the past have shown that it's the least worst system.

?? Β what has N Korea got to do with Pol Pot ?? Well I think Nick is trying to push the argument against communism (which I'm not sure works either). North Korea is a good example of where the monetary system still fails the people). I would agree pure dictorship does too. As I've said before, it only takes one person to fuck it up for everyone else. Are we not moving down that path here?

Serious question.

As for the rest of your thoughts... I pretty much agree, greed and selfishness are the problems though not money in itself. Society should encourage 'philanthropy' (both large and small scale) far more. I've often wondered if we are more 'caring' than animals. Is it better to get taken out by a predictor when you get old and sick, or be pumped full of drugs and the suffering be dragged out for everyone to see? Having said that, I'd say yes to the drugs and old age.

No, I'm suggesting that where money has been "eliminated", it was in 100% of cases an unmitigated disaster. And having been to Cambodia 20 years or so ago, it remained severly damaged by the experiment of 25 or so years earlier.
