Anyone used it?
I've always had my mail delivered to my parents' house but now I'm further away I was thinking of setting on up post restante account at a more local post office. I have a couple of questions if anyone can help?
Do you need a passport to set one up/ collect mail or will other i.d. do eg. driving licence/ credit card?
If mail is addressed as normal, rather than the post restante address, will the mail be delivered to the normal address or does setting up post restante automatically divert all mail to the new address?
Thanks for any replies.

You don't need to set up an account, you will need photo ID to collect mail the first time, until they get to know you, and it's polite to let the postmaster/mistress know that mail will be arriving for you. You simply tell people to send you mail addressed as follows and put a return address on the back of the envelope. (Obviously the address is the one I use, you will need to put the address of the post office you choose instead)
Mr Snot Gobbler, POSTE RESTANTE, Post Office, 23 Broad St, Brinklow, Rugby, Warwickshire, CV23 0LS

It seems banks and pension providers need one so unless you switch to a barter system and give them up I think we are stuck with having to have one. I think I've only met one person who may have achieved it. He lived on a boat and lived day by day doing odd jobs for cash. Can you still pay your boat licence in cash?

The only problem with post restante is that you often find the post office staff know nothing about it, they are not told it even exists because the PO make no money from it, though it is a service main post offices have to provide by law, but not sub post offices, so you have to arrange it with them first, and remember they will only accept items sent by post office services, no couriers, Amazon items or foreign mail. Its a good plan to print out the post offices poste restante webpage and show it to them, then they cannot deny it.

I have used it several times around the country.
You will have to pre arrange receipt of mail (as mentioned above) as many post offices do not receive mail.
Most recently I have used the Berkamsted PO.

Try to avoid post offices in such places as WH Smiths. The Amazon thing is a bit odd. If you give them a Poste Restante address the chances are it wont be accepted but if you look at the Amazon pick up points, many of them are POs.

I would guess that the efficiency of the local poste restante service increases in direct proportion to the number of liveaboard narrowboaters in the local area. At Brinklow, the postmistress, like the doctors' surgery is fully up to speed with the concept of living on a boat, to the point where the post office will keep an item for months (they are supposed to return it to sender if not collected in two weeks) because they know I will be away cruising but will eventually return for it.
