18 Years I've lived in this country, the first 17 of which quite happiley! What the Hell is going on with the explosion of black flies (think you lot call them midgets or midgies) and the flecking mosquito's!!! 17 years not one mosquito or black fly bite, since getting out of the hospital every single day I've aquired at least 3 new bites, if not more. To the point, I've put up fly paper to try and win the battle. I can't afford to loose any more blood!! Now I appreciate we live in a ditch, but why didn't I get eaten alive for the first 3 summers? I don't know if its got anything to do with the meds I'm on now or what, but although Dave is getting bitten, its no where near as frequent as me. We used a spray called OFF back in Canada, where we have loads of black flies and mosquito's. What do you folks recommend to use over here? Oh, and it can't be anything with too many chemicals in it or it's ok to use on broken skin. Neither of my legs have completely healed yet and the skin is litterly tissue paper thin on my shins & calves with loads of cracks (yes I put barrier cream on them daily, but that doesn't help with the bites)

We have none here, but I have spent a lot of time in mosquito affected areas, eat lots of garlic, put citronella oil on your wrists and ankles and get a mozzie burner and some spare plates.

You were probably bitten but didn't notice. My guess is some medication has made you less tolerant.

I never get any trouble from mosquitoes or any other flying insects. I think they realise that I know how to kill them very quickly, like the karate kid.

Nets everywhere. Keeps them out. I quite enjoy electrocuting the bastards with one of those tennis racket things. If I'm really lost for something to do, catch them with a jar using a scraping of jam, seal the top with cling film when full, and put them in the microwave. It's a bit like bursting bubble wrap 😊

Midges will not fly when wind speed is above 6mph. I'll leave you or others to come up with a solution. Sadly Avon Skin so Soft removed the active ingredient a while back (because they didn't want the product associated with pests) otherwise I'd be able to recommend a chemical solution.

We use citronella candles and jungle formula works too. One thing to remember is they bite most people, the reaction apparently is an allergic one. So antihistamines like Cetrazine can help.

Funnily enough, I used to take a girlfriend away with me to Italy in the truck 30 years ago, the mozzies used to leave me looking like a pin cushion at night, yet they never once bit her. She was vegetarian, that's the only thing I can imagine made a difference.
