Came across some nasty biters last week, they were nibbling at me, enough to leave an itch when I brushed them off, a bit like horse flies but canal related, came across loads on the Macc once, passing through a reedy area. Pointed oval body. Is this what eats Foxes?

I would try mooring close to a half-wit with a 'composting' toilet, not too close obviously.

And from UK Rivers forum re the nasty biters.... "Thanks, everyone. Positive ID. Clegs they are Haematopota pluvialis - and you're all quite correct: they are horseflies, but not the sort we normally get in abundance around here, which don't have the tucked in wings and aren't silent either. I'm currently on garlic and citronella candle diet ... that should sort 'em out. Now, what do i need to eat or spray to repel swans?"
"Segs" was lurking in my feeble brain, not far off Clegs! The next post on that thread recommended buckshot for swans.

Just wondered if the situation had eased with the weather cooling off, or indeed did you try any of the suggested remedies?

Eased off? NOT here it's not.... On Thursday night, sat(sitting?) on the bench near the boat having a few glasses of vino( well actually a box between us ahem) with another boater, I got 11 nasty ones on my left and 7 and my right leg - she was bitten to buggary too THROUGH her leggings. NONE of the creams I've tried from the chemist has soothed them either.
I'm going to buy a Burkha!

People who drink wine from boxes deserve to get bitten in the cratch.
