Thanks for the link gazza, very interesting. I like the picture of the sailing canoe with the outrigger. I met a guy in the carabean who built these and sailed between the islands, a lot braver than me as its open ocean between the islands.

gazza's link is showing how wooden boats are still made there as the French used to build their wooden boats, and taught them how to do it.
There are however still quite a few other countries in the world, where wooden boats are build and repaired, a cousin of mine was witness of the building of a fishing boat of about 60' in Viëtnam, which was absolutely incredible how the craftsman there with only very simple means managed to build such a big ship.
The engine was installed as soon as the bottom- and the first bottom sideplanks were fitted, and the way they steamed- and fitted their planks was something my cousin is still talking about.
