We don't drink or smoke and go through about 1200 a month.

I'm still working full time and love my job but every time I do a trip out on the boat I have the urge to finish work and just' do one 'for a few years cruising around. My daughters are set up for Uni so I've no ties really other than my own made ones with random hobbies and interests which I can soon give up & sure I could turn a few quid here and there with what I know and can do engineering / boaty wise My question is ... what do you CCers spend roughly a month on having a basic boaty life? Servicing and looking after the boat are no issues, I do all that myself, just basically running costs, cruising and eating / drinking etc cheers If you're thinking about it, and if it's one of your dreams, then don't waste too much time and just do it before it's too late, and you'll regret it. You may still have regrets, but only because you didn't do it earlier. Myself, I'm retired and I get peanuts for my retirement-pension, a bit less than £600, to be honest, I can't survive on that, mainly because I'm a fool that can't throw stuff away, because of that I've been paying for more than 30 years rent for a lock up garage, and 10 years for a second one. Without these expenses, I would break even, but I've some other costs that I shouldn't have, like 3 boats, for which I have to pay insurances and for 2 of them the mooring fees, the third one is on a free mooring, and if all is well (just had a phonecall) she'll be sold and paid for next w-e after I've delivered the boat to her new owner. That will give me the money to do some more cruising for a while, and if I eventually sell another boat, my financial problems will have gone. For the rest, I live dirt cheap as I am a non-smoking, vegetarian T-total, that you'll never find in a bar, and only very rarely in a restaurant, partly because for the price of 1 meal in a restaurant, I can prepare my own meals for a week, and know exactly what I've eaten, and how fresh the product used were. I've never owned or rented a house or apartment, so I can't let or sell that, but as I'm not a big spender at all, and don't need much money to be happy, I prefer the joy of simple things. One thing that may make my life a bit cheaper than yours could be the difference in country, as I'm living in France, where the boating licences are quite a bit cheaper than in the UK. But for you, being still fairly young and in good shape, you may find some odd jobs on your way, that will help keeping a bit of a cash-flow coming in. Don't forget, you only live once, unless your name is "Bond" Peter. ps. I've always been a great fan of the Beatles song : "The best things in life are free"

Good to hear you've spld a boat Peter and rationalizing your costs.im sure it will work out for you. Yes Kris, I hope that the guy keeps his word, as I've had all sorts of dreamers (worse than myself) showing up with piles of empty promisses. But if it really does happen, I may feel more inclined to start doing something about getting rid of the stuff I can live without, as in reality, I need very little, and all this hording is reducing my freedom- and my fun in life. One thing that is against me, is the time that's flying too fast for me to keep up with. Peter.

Seriously consider decluttering all that junk..one of my sons has so little he can just up sticks and go anywhere...he doesn't want nor need all the trappings most of us cling to..he's the one that treks off across these islands...I brought a garden shed at his GF for his stuff to be stored in so he didn't clutter their house....he has one tiny box in a corner and they've filled the rest of the shed. Im always getting rid of stuff I don't want...Try clearing to reduce down to one to start with. I hope the boat sale goes through.

Now I have a new dream, that is : to be able to be like your son, with all I need in one tiny box. The box I'll end up in will surely be quite a bit bigger Peter.

Fingers crossed for the sale going through for you. While I was preparing all the stuff that belonged to the little boat that should have been sold, I received a call only 1 hour ago, of the guys wife (I suppose that he was worried that I was going to shout at him) to tell me that something completely unforseen had happened, and that they couldn't buy the boat anymore. Too bad, as that would have been the start of a welcome step towards more freedom, never mind, sooner or later someone else will show up (I hope). It's good I hadn't left for the delivery yet, as I was waiting for a mail with a photo of the promissed certified bank cheque before departure. Peter.

Sorry to hear that. I know you cannot plan for the unforeseen, but I hate it when people 'give their word' then back out of a deal. It happens in the house market a lot. If the purchase was so tenuous that the first issue 'knocks it back' he shouldn't really have built up your hopes until ready to shake on it.
Never mind, onwards and upwards, shoulders back, head up. It will sell I'm sure.
Bon chance

Bon chance Rog Thanks Rog, I must say that I'm really disappointed as this guy called me at the beginning of july as he wanted to know more about the boat's inn's and out's, he then called me the 13th to see if it would be possible to visit her the 14th early in the morning. So I left here pretty early to get to the boat that's moored 60km from where I am moored with the boat I live on, to be there at 7am. The guy arrived in a recent Audi 4 x 4, and was very enthousiastic, he lives with his wife on a 38m barge, and they have a consultancy business in Paris that's going strong (is what he said), and he was going to call me the next day, after having showed the photos he made to his wife, about their decision, and he said that he could pay me cash if I prefered aswell. Well he didn't call the next day, but only yesterday, just before I wrote about it on TB, so a bit later than planned, but it made me very happy, too bad it didn't last. I never understand why many people have to play bigger than they are, in the end they're only fooling themselfs, making other people sad by doing that. Peter.

...something completely unforseen had happened... Found a better/cheaper/nearer one? One can only guess, but I don't thinks so, it's probably more that he couldn't really afford to buy the boat. It sounds a bit strong that just after he called me yesterday to say that he was going to see the bank today to get the certified cheque, and his wife's call this morning to say that the sales was off, that he found another boat, but everything is possible. When he visited the 13th we talked for more than 2 hours, and he said that this was exactly the boat he'd been looking for, and we talked about his 38m barge that I knew from the days it was trading with her previous owner, and he was really very keen on buying her. But whatever the real reason is, the sale didn't happen, I'm not really interested to know why it didn't, as I can't do anything with that. Peter.

I'd suggest that on your own, if you don't run a car, £800 a month would cover things nicely. That would allow the odd modest meal out, drinks in a pub from time to time. There should be enough left over each month to put towards inevitable repairs, blacking etc. This assumes that you shop at Aldi etc., and don't feel the need to own 'must have' labels on clothes, electronics etc.
