I had the great honour to be 'best man' at a friends second marriage in 2004. It was a truly joyous occasion, staying overnight in a lovely hotel, spending many happy hours with fantastic people. In 2007 I had to speak at the funeral of the same friend who'd died having suffered with a cancerous brain tumour, diagnosed only twelve months earlier. Those twelve months were quite difficult. The time since, even more so. Yesterday was the tenth anniversary of his death. Where does the time go. If you are lucky enough to know a 'larger than life' character; the 'life and soul of any party' type chap; a giant of a man in stature and personality; a true friend, then cherish them. Life is alarmingly short. Make the most of it Rog

I've known two larger than life characters.
First was Jock 22 stone, I stood up to him when we first met some 30 years ago, later shared a house with him. One of the kindest person's I've known once you got through the bullshit. He died a couple of months ago aged 49.
Second was Jo (who became my wife). 5 foot 1 and a bit (the bit mattered to her!). She was a teacher (as well as all her other attributes), so well respected by the majority of pupils in a fairly rough school that when some toerag let down her car tyres, said toerag was marched into the headmasters office by a peer posse the following day. She died about 10 years ago aged 42.
They were the only two people that I can place the exact location and circumstance of where we met. Cherish people like them.

Our 17.5 years old cat is in the car in the shade of a petrol station in Keuruu. It is a sweltering hot day, much hotter than we saw all June/July/Aug in England. He looks rather last-legs, has lost weight - from missing us for 9.5 weeks? His fur is all 'tacky' so I will cut those lumps off with scissors and give him a shower when we get home. We can stick him in sauna to dry Just driven from Helsinki city centre via Hämeenlinna & Orivesi. Stopped for a decent 'late lunch' (it's 6pm). 'Standing table' - all you can eat, 9.50 Euros (£8.50). The next 3.5 hours' drive through 'Nothingness' - just forest & lakes. Multia, Karstula, Kivijärvi, Kinnula, Toholampi, Kannus, Himanka. I should dig me camera out...

I suppose he is too old to bring with you. that's a good age and I'm sure he will go on longer, especially where you live.

Rog's post stirred few memories....I knew a very flamboyant larger than life man and his wife...he composed music for concerts for refugees and prisoners on death row. He wrote 2 songs for my daughter to sing and they were just right for her. His wife I liked very much. She gave everything to look after and support Dick..when she died first I promised him I would attend a memorial concert he wrote for her...and I did..driving 7 hours in icy weather in a car with dodgy tracking...I will never forget his face when I walked in the church....I told him I had promised...Maritta was one of the kindest women I have ever known yet until Rog's post she had gone from my mind. Dick later died of a heart attack during the time I was ill..I could not drive as my sight and balance disturbed by the de personalisation attack I had had...I could not go to his funeral...I'm now gonna check whether I still have copies of the songs he wrote for Shelley.... The other 2 men who have stood by me throughout my ill health are still there, their help and support is something that went beyond anything I had ever experienced..totally unconditional support and friendship....they are ancient now but still my crumbling knights in their oh so shiny armour....I do appreciate them and they know what they mean to me....I made sure to tell them.. I think we should all acknowledge more those wonderful people who we engage with in life...all to often its the ragbags we remember...
