Preparation for engine removal completed by me today. It was a sod to undo the drive coupling, propshaft was really stiff as I tried to push it back to give clearance to remove the plate. That alone took me an hour. Took the alternator off, removed all wiring and put nice labels (plus a bit of oil) via sellotape and bits of scrap paper. 3 of the wires were a real pig to get to. Exhaust out of the way now, fuel line removed, engine mounting bolts undone with great difficulty as I had to use an adjustable spanner. No harm done, apart from bloody knuckles. Pretty pleased with myself really, being able to do it all.
It's all ready now for the big lift out. Apparently this involves hauling the boat into the lock, piece of steel straddling the lock, rope the engine to the steel then lower the water level in the lock. Should be interesting!

Knifer says he will probably be along on Thursday. It's not a bad place to moor in many ways. Great chippy over the road, several open topped bins locally to put Lidl bags full of rubbish in, water point only a 200 yard stroll carrying a 25 litre drum full of water. 300 yards to a place where you can empty the elsan for a pound donation to charity. Convenience shop over the road if you're desperate, as everything is very expensive. This is all offset by the trucks that thunder up and down the road that runs along the canal, all day, and most of the night.

I'll give you a hand with it Ricco if I can. Just about to set off now, I'll let you know where I get to today, shouldn't be far away.

It's worth taking lots of photos with a digi-camera for every stage, and writing notes so you can remember how it all goes back together. The convenience store I thought was fairly well-stocked. Poplar Stores - Premier. 2, Poplar Drive. middlewichdirectory.blogspot.fi/2013/03/poplar-stores.html

Poplar Stores - Premier. 2, Poplar Drive. middlewichdirectory.blogspot.fi/2013/03/poplar-stores.html That's the one. It is quite well stocked but the prices rival Co Op so it's Lidl for me every time, or Home Bargains if I fancy a trip over to Winsford. Talking of Winsford what a shithole that place is. The shopping centre there seems to be filled with fat parents in pyjamas swearing at their large broods.

It's on hold at the moment really, waiting for Tony to come back over, unless you happen to have an engine hoist on board? Make you a cuppa though, talk about birds and all that.

So the boat goes down in the lock, then what? Do you work on the engine dangling there standing on the boat? Or do you lower the engine onto a floating flat surface and pull it out of the lock... to... where?
What happens when a boater comes along to use the lock and finds you holding them up?

I think the plan is to lower the boat so the engine is clear of the hole then replace the cover over the hole then raise the water until the engine sits on the cover.....at night.

Nah, we'll get it out without a hoist. 100KG engine, really awkward fitting under a cruiser deck, only 1 person can get down there...

Deckboards strong enough for that? I know I stand on them, that's 74kg - and when the Witch stands on them that's 100kg....! Does an engine weigh more than 174kg....?
