I'm sure we'll begin the conversation by talking about our respective kingfisher sightings along the cut. I've seen pheasants on the Macc so that might be the next topic. If we move on to talk about tits, so be it.

Well the engine is out now. Many thanks to Mr Stabby who hauled the boat to the lock while I made a futile effort to steer it with my pole, due to the silt being about 3 feet deep. The yard had the engine out in 2 minutes, very impressive. A fork lift truck and chains, bit of manouvering past the exhaust, it was out, and now is on my stern deck. The latest frustration is that there are no timing marks on the crankshaft pulley. It never rains, it pours.

The latest frustration is that there are no timing marks on the crankshaft pulley. It never rains, it pours. If I understood the work that has to be done properly (changing the cylinderhead gasket) it's easy enough to make your own timing markks on the crankshaft pully, as you see TDC with the head off. Success with the job, Peter.

I would have thought this engine was an overhead valve engine? if it is no problems whip the heads off as the pushrods run on a cam in the block

As the engine is now out, I would consider running it in a car/van to T W Marine - I mean, if it needs to be ripped to bits and done properly.

Thanks!
Well, it needs a wash for starters, doesn't it?!
What's the next move?
Perhaps it's just tired of shuffling round Middlewich and has lost the will to live - it wants to go on a journey!
Tell me again the engine model and year. Got the owner's manual? Got the workshop manual? Do Vetus do a repair service? Where are they?

I'll put my cards on the table and suggest new engine.
I'd replace it with the equivalent Beta Marine unit with "special feet" made to fit existing engine beds provided that the Beta unit will fit in the same hole.

I'll put my cards on the table and suggest new engine. I'd go for ripping it all open and replacing everything that needs to be replaced. Then you know what you have. New engines these days can be rubbish. I may be wrong. It's better for the environment to repair old stuff rather than just keep buying new. However, that's bad for the economy - and filling up rubbish dumps is a preemptive strike against future generations of other peoples' kids, most of whom will be complete cunts.
