Out for a pub meal last night before work and I made an observation that has been subconsciously annoying me for months...
Why have plates fallen out of favour as the item of choice for serving food on?
Perhaps I'm a traditionalist, but I don't like having food brought to me on a shovel, a piece of old roofing slate, a greaseproof piece of imitation newspaper or a chopping board that should be reserved for cheese and crackers, nor do I like my chips in a little galvanised bucket, I mean WTF?
A rare steak served on a flat piece of wood is only ever going to end with run-off and what about the cleanliness? Surely there's hygienic issues with this sort of 'trendy shite' ?
And whilst I'm in full flow....What's this with serving Stella and the like in those trendy 'goldfish bowl' type of glass that encourages water (condensation??) to run down to the base then drip off onto your crotch every time you take a sip, makes you look like you've pissed in ya pants after a pint or so!
Lets get back to reality and serve food on plates and beer in straight pint glasses!
What annoys you with the advent of most pubs catering for the trendy, fashionable set?

Jane heartily agrees with you on the lack of proper plates.
She's been threatening to send back the next meal that turns up on something other than a plate for months.

I like to 'chase' the best bits around my plate by spinning it round as I eat... Rectangular ones end up in collision with said shite Stella glasses!!😡😡

Serving a meal on a square plate rather than a round one enables the pub to charge a couple of quid extra for the same meal. Square plates are currently associated (sub-consciously) with better quality so even if the meal is piss poor (very likely), rave reviews will follow.
How stupid are humans.

Kind of connected but a couple of years ago we went to a pub which served steak on what I think they called lava rock. It was basically like a very thick piece of slate which was pre-heated so you could cook the steak in front of you to your liking.
What a great idea. It saves a qualified chef the task of cooking and you can only blame yourself for under/over cooking the steak.
Needless to say the fire alarms went off. Isn't that why we have kitchens?

I'm disturbed by all this. Its very worrying that someone is going to a pub and drinking Stella. Used to drink 'real ale' years ago but got fed up with the inconsistencies between pubs, night and even pints on the same night so moved onto lager...at least I know it's going to be shit wherever or whenever I drink it!! 😉

UK pubs are a bit behind the times on this.
I first had Steak on a charred wood plank and chips in a bucket in Norrtalje, Sweden in June 2000.
It was a crap idea 17 years ago 👍

If you drink larger you deserve to get your food on an oblong plate.

Locally sourced fresh seasonal vegetables - since when was asparagus grown on the west coast of Scotland in January... Duck breast that hasn't had the fat rendered down. Belly of pork with crackling - it's called crackling for a reason, if I wanted an unchewable piece of leather it wouldn't be for eating. Some good stuff here if you want a proper plate - wewantplates.com/

I think it's sad how many pubs are shutting down. It's very noticeable when you're travelling around the waterways system or roads a lot. The ability to serve up good food seems the main pull now as it's so much cheaper to buy booze from supermarkets and there is often more choice. It's also a vicious circle. When pubs start to struggle they often put prices up which just puts the remaining punters noses out of joint. Another tactic seems to be only opening the pub on limited days or times. That puts off the occasional visiter when they turn up expecting it to be open. They then spread the message causing others not to bother. Maybe we need to support pubs a bit more. I know there are a few village pubs around which are run by the villagers to prevent it being shut down by a greedy management company. Anyway I see most of these problems being caused by greed. As a shareholder/speculator people want something for nothing. As a customer, people want quality but don't want to pay for it. As a worker, people want to be paid lots for doing fuck all. What could possibly go wrong?
