I think the drink driving laws were the initial game changer for pubs. Society altered significantly from there, and cost and smoking bans just added to the downward trend. Pubs and indeed, any business closing are sad to see, but 'market forces' will keep the popular open and the unpopular closed. Sadly some of the popular, aren't what I would call good Rog

I'm disturbed by all this. Its very worrying that someone is going to a pub and drinking Stella. Used to drink 'real ale' years ago but got fed up with the inconsistencies between pubs, night and even pints on the same night so moved onto lager...at least I know it's going to be shit wherever or whenever I drink it!! 😉 I'm a lager drinker too but try to avoid Stella if poss

I hate eating out, especially anywhere vaguely 'posh'. Eastern European waiters with one arm rammed up their back called you 'sir' (no, I haven't been knighted yet) then constantly interrupting your conversations asking if everything is OK. Yes, now fuck off, would be the best reply. The most enjoyable thing about the experience is reading the menu. The embelishments in order to justify the inevitable high prices can be staggering. Writing the menu partly in French is an old trick, but holds good today. Lots of things seem to be pan fried these days. No problem with that but what else do you suggest using, a saucer?
Here's my offering:
Succulent fillet of corn fed chicken seared in the pot with a rich combination of finest Sicillian tomatoes, delightful green olives from Tuscany and medallions of ricotta cheese, fresh from the farmer's market. Served with Jersey royals drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and parsley from the herb terrace, and a compot of artichoke hearts, fennel, wild garlic, splashed with award winning Somerset cider.
Only £29.95.

Serving a meal on a square plate rather than a round one enables the pub to charge a couple of quid extra for the same meal. Square plates are currently associated (sub-consciously) with better quality so even if the meal is piss poor (very likely), rave reviews will follow. How stupid are humans. What total bullshit...

Why is that bullshit? I agree with ricco on this one. Perhaps you're not used to freezer-to-microwave meals in South America? It's standard fare in Britain.

You never know how someone else feels until you step into their fur.

Good food, cooked well doesn't need to be 'fancied up' to be memorable.
