Junior explained it nicely (correctly) which doesn't alter the fact that in the many previous pages he'd taken a right verbal kicking because he'd dared to suggest an historic boat owner had got it wrong.
Do you really think if he'd been describing the actions of a hire boat, there would have been the same level of opprobrium.
I accept his op was a little in the style of the Daily Express, but he was describing in his own way what he witnessed.
I saw Trevor Maggs, on Corona last spring, hit every piece of masonry at Hillmorton middle locks going up. The worst crashing about I've seen at a narrow lock in many years. I appreciate the full length boats can be difficult beasts, and I didn't think it worthy of comment at the time, assuming he just fouled up. But the guy is in his eighties now. Maybe he is begining to struggle.

Age must come into it.
When this old geyser hits lock gates etc with his boat does anyone ever mention it to him? I suppose it could come across as rude but if he is in fact starting to cause damage it could be that quite a lot of people resent him. I'd want to know about it if people were pissed off with something I was doing.

I always understood that in capitalising god it was a way of recognising they existed. Not capitalising the word marks out that you dont believe they do or did. Correct. And I don't believe in the beardy sadist on a cloud who (allegedly) brings so much misery and death to his creations, so it's lower case for me! Yet you capatilise Telemachus

What does "this cesspit of god's mistakes." Mean if one does not believe in gods. I don't believe in gods.
Its meaningless.

Correct. And I don't believe in the beardy sadist on a cloud who (allegedly) brings so much misery and death to his creations, so it's lower case for me! Yet you capatilise Telemachus Yes because it's someone's name. A proper noun. A fictional character (although there were plenty of subsequent Telemachuses who were real). In the case of god it is a bit confusing because the word is both a noun and a proper noun. It is like calling your dog Dog. However unbelievers such as me who will of course be punished by having to spend eternity logged in to TB, make the point that god isn't real by deliberately not capitalising it so that it becomes more "a god, believed in by fools" than "The one and only God Almighty". I guess it's just a convention but the important point is that I deliberately didn't capitalise god (really annoying, iPad keeps auto-correcting to God. Bloody American religious zealots!). It wasn't a mistake. Anyway if you have a problem with it I suggest you contact the religious police and have me extradited to Iran.

Most of the crashing I have seen is with old working boats not being able to wind the throttle back fast enough on those wheel things, I have had a go on one a few years ago and I struggled with it it, I suppose with practice I would be ok but they arnt for me

I agree the gear change arrangements are a pain on some old boats.
