Thanks for all the greetings! great comments and funny ones, I look forward to being one of you. Looking forward to the boat and will rely on the odd help from this forum! being a novice I will certainly need some Welcome to a great place and a wonderful new life style! Don't worry at all about being a novice, just don't be in a rush to lose the "title"; we've been living & cruising on ours for 4 years now and are still considered complete novices by alot of those who have been doing the same for over 20 years. As long as your considerate, polite, and not in a rush, you will definately make some good friends on the cut. As for this forum...I personally think it's a great place for novices, there are no where near a many "mick takers" here as there are on other forums; well at least if your asking questions relating to boating....anything else and your open game There are loads of very knowledgable folks here, ranging from engines, electrics, plumbing, dealing with crt, battery management, solar fit outs, wood working to name but a few of the topics our experts are happy to share their info. And the best part is, most will answer your questions in layman's terms if you ask them to, so even a complete novice can get the gist of what they are saying

Its a very pertinent question! I would suggest that if there was a broker involved then they could be pursued unless they specifically require buyers to check all paperwork and shielded themselves from bad things happening to them. It would not surprise me if they did. Personally I'd check all available paperwork anyway to be sure. Misrepresentation?

Did you check the boat on Jim Shead's (pronounced Shed's) Boat List?  CRT/EA may have details of when it was first registered with them.  it's hosted on canalplaner now and has not got the year on.

And I don't think CRT would be authorised to give out details. The BW index number can provide a certain amount of info but is not proof of boat age.

You've seen something else afaik it's paid for but prior to that the folder with paperwork, invoices, instruction manuals and some wiring diagrams etc was held by the broker. I am not sure what access was allowed to read it. it's since being paid for that the folder was given to lieutime. hidden inside was some signed paperwork by that builder. I can not remember what the bit of paperwork was. how many years before the claimed age was it signed?

Ah.
Is it an RCD thing?
I wouldn't be that worried about +/- 5 years on boat age but I am a bit unusual.
Since about 1998 (?) boats fitted out by owner can only be sold on after 5 years or must be RCD (Recreational Craft Directive) compliant, a bit of a ballache, or something like that. This could lead to "grey areas" in the second hand boat market regarding boat age and claimed build date.
Its a bit of a strange situation.

I am kind of with you and foxy. foxy says although I polite word with the broker would be on my list. I get with such things as fittings and stuff is up to the vendor to check but you would of thought a broker would be more diligent with the year. although the paperwork year could be when the boat was commisoned and the advertised year was she was eventually fitted out and used. a bit like cars that they are built in a certain year but not sold and registered untill later.
