What is happening to this Country of ours ? First it was the amount of Pubs shutting down,I was in Birmingham yesterday and couldn't believe the amount boarded up and some in Prime Positions as well. The latest endangered species I have spotted is a half decent Bakers, where have they all gone, especially in the South East. None in Bletchley or Milton Keynes, none in Luton or Dunstable, none in Northampton, town after town our vans visit and it seems they are disappearing at an alarming rate.Down in Kent last week to see a customer,I spotted a Hovis sign in the distance and my heart started beating faster, pulled the car over and got out, what did I find ? some Arse had turned it into a private house called "The old Bakehouse" and had kept the old signage for authenticity, what a prick. Have Greggs and the Supermarkets put these small bakeries out of business ? occasionally you do find one,I did in Chipping Norton on Monday,2 sausage rolls,2 bread rolls,2 belgian buns £6. I am still traumatised yet by paying £6 but it was way better than Greggs

I bet if you research this you will probably find that they are disappearing because of pollution controls more than because of competition.
Some years back, 20-30 years maybe, some panel of fools decided that the smell coming from bakeries was a pollutant. Assuming a bakery uses gas ovens, there would naturally be the pollution from the combustion of natural gas, but there was something about the odor itself that was considered toxic, or offensive or some other nonsense. Bakeries were then required to put in expensive exhaust scrubbing equipment, which they couldn't afford to do.
We no longer have any local bakeries, nor will we ever again enjoy the wonderful smell that wafted from the bakeries.

Not that I believe they're proper bakeries. Tom

They make bread and rolls in different shapes and sizes, but it all tastes like it's made from the same cheap dough. It reminds me of Wonder Bread. The sweets they sell don't taste like much of anything but sugar. And the worst part, you could walk through the bakery section blindfolded and you wouldn't know you were there because there is no wonderful bakery smell.
