We went to see Billy Elliot on Saturday it was a good musical play but for me it had to much swearing and it was massively left wing far more than the film. On the whole I preferred the film which is unusual as I love musicals and I would defiantly give this musical a miss if it comes closer

I thought the best thing about Billy Elliot was the Middlesbrough Transport Bridge!

On the whole I preferred the film which is unusual as I love musicals and I would defiantly give this musical a miss if it comes closer When I was in my teens my parents used to take me to see musicals and I really enjoyed them. I saw Richard Burton in Camelot, Mary Martin in South Pacific, Mitzi Gaynor in Oklahoma. Living near Hollywood, it used to be that big name stars would do work in local theaters. I've seen Yul Brenner in The king and I and, one of my all time favorites, Dick Van Dyke in The Music Man. I haven't been to a play/musical in a long time. Andrew Lloyd Weber isn't exactly my cup of tea and it seems his plays are all that are produced around here anymore.

Well whilst we are on about stage plays at least, I watched the first series of the BBC Mrs Browns Boys this week...horrors! and I really was prepared to be appalled since its everything I hate, characters in drag, raucous sit com, crude double entendre...but it was free from the marina laundry and so I risked it. I surprised myself by laughing out loud at some of it. It successfully breaks the fourth wall and even smashes it on occasions by outrageous ad libbing that the cast and stage crew have obviously not planned for but cope with very well. I may get fed up by mid series two but I will look round for a cheap copy. edit to add my favourite line... Son: "I got promoted this week to Supervisor" ... Mammy: " Wonderful! not an ordinary visor!" I have been to see Mrs browns boy twice once in Dublin for my Birthday and the second time at Leeds equally good. The whole Dublin experience was funny as the Queen did her visit the day after we left everywhere was secure It was a right pain getting to our hotel Croake park hotel opposite the football ground the Queen was visiting but it was a memorable weekend especially as Lynn put bubble bath in the Jacuzzi and turned it on by accident!!!! couldnt see her never mind turn the thing off!!!!

I think it probably is a generation thing harking back to the days of Up Pompeii and Allo Allo maybe ... I talked to my daughter about how I had found some of Mrs BB funny and she was horrified, wouldnt listen and la la la la'd all through the rest of my comments! Ah well, nice to shake up your kids now and then. Both of my children enjoyed Father Ted but I never did. Up Pompei and allo allo now you are talking I have seen allo allo as a play by amateurs very good laffed at them and with them all the way through
