Crt suck the fun out of boating

If CRT were threatening people with capital punishment (or a visit from Mr Stabby) then that would definitely "suck the fun out of boating".

But they have so far not explored or consulted on this option.

Yes, usually the ones overstaying on visitor moorings, running noisy generators at odd times, mooring on lock landings etc.

The people I interact on the canals with, are generally people who are cruising and thus we meet at locks. Happy hire boaters, leisure boaters enjoying a few days out. I tend not to interact with folk who sit in their boats with the curtains drawn grumping about how they’ve going to have to move again in 13 days. So I suggest that one's impression depends on the sort of boating you do and the sort of people you encounter doing it. 

Don't know Kris, I seem to remember people saying the same things about BWB thirty odd years ago.

If those people who are moaning and leaving are people who are only on the cut because they can't find/afford something ashore, then my attitude is "Good"

If the people who are leaving are genuine boaters summer cruisers, weekenders, or genuine CCers and are honestly leaving just because of CRT then that is a shame but I will bet you that the reasons for someone leaving a lifestyle they love will not depend on one thing.

I'm beggining to wonder whether it's social media which is sucking the life out of boating. Shit in, shit out and all that.

I would say that describing C&RT as 'sucking' the fun out of boating doesn't go anywhere near far enough !  

Throughout most of the period during which they existed, British Waterways progressively degenerated into what eventually became C&RT, and C&RT really aren't doing anything much other than elevate BW's short-sighted and bloody-minded incompetence to new levels. The problem that this leaves us all with is that our system of canals and river navigations won't survive many more years of the treatment they're now on the receiving end of from Parry and his cohorts. 

Unless this process is halted in the very near future, there isn't going to be a uesable/navigable, or linked up, system available to us. All that will be left will be isolated lengths of semi-derelict waterways, full of boats that don't, and can't, go anywhere on account of lengthy sections of the waterways being 'temporarily' closed due to navigational, operational, and maintenance problems. This has, in fact, already begun with the Leicester Cut closed for an unspecified period between Kilby Bridge and Aylestone because C&RT can't keep enough water in it to make it passable, even by today's shallow drafted pleasure craft. 

If anyone thinks that I'm spouting alarmist nonsense about this, I suggest that they swat up on a bit of late 1940's, early 1950's waterway history. The Kennet & Avon came under British Transport Commission control in 1947 when the majority of this country's waterways were taken into public ownership, ie. 'Nationalized', by the post war Labour government. The waterway was then in a very similar condition to that into which all of the C&RT controlled canals have degenerated since they replaced BW in 2012, and following a series of 'temporary' closures due to operational problems and leakage the canal was closed to through navigation in 1951 after a breach near Avoncliff Aqueduct - all in all, a remarkably similar train of events to that which now appears to be manifesting itself on the Leicester Cut.
 
In C&RT's early days they were very fond of promoting a slogan about 'Keeping people and History connected'. It would seem that this objective has possibly become their one and only area of positive achievement. Not content with merely keeping us us all 'connected' with history, they are demonstrably doing their very best to repeat some of it for us !

Its to some extent swings and roundabouts regarding maintenance. In the 60s and 70s, most of the BCN was virtually unnavigable or at the very least, a major adventure. Now nearly all of it is great, well maintained and quite deep (Walsall canal excepted). Meantime yes some of the hitherto well maintained waterways such as the Grand Union, have deteriorated.
