I was down on the foreshore earlier near Millwall and I found the original copy of the bible, which was nice.
I also found quite a nice old hand forged iron marlinspike with E&Co Ltd stamped into it on both sides. Always nice to find something with a makers or owners mark but who were E&Co?
I know its a bit of a niche area but someone might know. Possibly . maybe ?

E&co were stamps for two silver makers but I'm guessing your findings of it being iron are correct. Did you use a magnet?

I found it by eye at low tide, walking on the foreshore. no magnet involved.
Interesting about the silver.
Its hand forged wrought iron and old enough to be fairly well corroded and show the iron lamination in some areas.
I really like old iron tools.

Anyway this is the offending item. A really nice old piece of iron with a story. Apparently marlinspikes were sometimes used as weapons. It is certainly quite handy !

That is bigger than I expected.
I use a marlin spike hitch when I put up my hammock. But my marlin spike is two inches long and wooden as the weight is on the knot not the spike.
So definitely not silver

If its wood its a fid The marlinspike I found is about the average size from what I can gather from internet searching. They came bigger and smaller but about a foot long seems to be average. Its a heavy duty hand tool for opening up large ropes for splicing etc and the hole in the end is slightly rectangular probably used for unscrewing shackle pins. A handy item for Mrs Tabby I reckon as it can be innocently carried by a sailor.

Nice, a real piece of history. 👍 My lad dropped a chisel in today, I've had it for 30 years. Magnet fishing time.

Good luck with it. I can find stuff other people drop in but if I drop something in myself it takes much longer
