I'll take some photos as I will be passing some old regents canal barges in various different states of conversion today and its nice to record them somehow so I'll do bow and stern photos with my phone then try to use imgur to put them on here later on. As they are unpowered I imagine there won't be any up north though its possible - has anyone seen any situated anywhere else than the southeast?
Or have any been motorised? I had a look at an unconverted one the other day what a nice old boat but too big for my mooring. Would make a lovely but huge project to get one cut it down a bit and motorise it. What a beast that would be !

What a beast that would be ! A couple of years ago there was one for sale on the duck, I quite liked it's shape, the middle section looked very straight so if they're all like the one I saw, shortening to the desired lenght would be an easy task, and probably because of that not all that expensive either. That one didn't have an engine, I think that they never had one, but putting in a shaft and engine beds isn't much work really, but it all ads up to the final bill. I'm sure that one of these could be made into a very nice barge to live on and travel with. Looking forward to see your photo's. Peter.

I don't know for certain that theae are all Regents canal barges but it seems probable. This first one is the puppet barge. Motorised via hydraulic drive in the rudder I believe. It does move I have seen it. ------------ This one has no rudder and no sign of rudder hanging eyes (is there a technical name?). No sign of any original deck hardware like bollards but it is a riveted boat of the right dimensions. Maybe a boat in the middle of a "train" behind a tug would not need a rudder anyway. Or perhaps the rudder was set inboard a bit. Cabin is a bit over the top. Another floating apartment I believe. ------------ This one seems to have had some modifications to the stern to give it an upswept edwardian launch style and I think its motorised. I like it but the wheelhouse is too big. I believe originally the stern was similar to the boat in the picture above but has been heavily modified. I might be completely wrong. It has no original bollards and also has a heavy duty anchor winch at the front but I think this is a modern addition. I expect the old bollards were removed as part of the conversion to a cabined boat. Its actually rather similar to the one above except for the stern. The removal of original deck hardware is a theme common to both boats. ------------ Lastly this one was described somewhere as a Thames lighter and it does have the rowlocks (Thames lighters were sometimes moved just using the tide and a large pair of oars called "sweeps" the rowlocks are quite large but basically the same thing as used on any other rowing vessel) so it probably is a lighter but one also used on the cut as it is Regents canal dimensions.

Been searching almost all day for a photo of the Regents canal barge that was for sale a couple of years ago.
I'm sad to say that it has disappeared, must have been left on one of my broken taptops, it's really too bad.
That barge had pointed bows, not like the ones on the photos here.
Peter.
