Mickey So it is - how wierd. Weird. Tut tut. What's wrong with 'Candle-in-the-Wind-Poof'? Everyone knows who it is. Anyways, near miss - from the A171 we took Grinkle Lane to Easington. I thought your address was Martin, The Pub, Staithes. That's what you told me.

No good having it posted to me as I'm not at home, but I have it on my list of 'must reads'. I always fancied canals from being a nipper because of reading the childrens books about Bill Badger who lived on the narrow boat, the Wandrin' Wind. They were written by BB. (Real name Denys Watkins-Pitchford) Is that the same author as wrote your book 'A summer on the Nene'. Agree with EVERYTHING you wrote about books by the way. Rog ETA It is the same BB - just googled. Also got a copy of Grey Seas Under for £2.70 on Ebay.....I'll let you know BB writes beautifully about the Nene, it's interesting to read about long since folded boat yards (AR Peaks of Wansford) New marinas and boat builders (Oundle Marina and Fairline boats) Still existent commercial traffic to Wellingborough. The end of milling at Titchmarsh followed by MNCC moving in. His love of wildlife and the vivid images he makes of places I know well - particular of the now very private Lilford Hall estate. Over 50 years ago he bobbed up and down my River in one of Mr Harry Lincoln's new fangled Elysian Cruisers hired from Mr Jack Newington - proprietor Oundle Marina. So much has changed and yet so little has changed.

I've got a copy of 'Little Grey Men' by BB. Saw it at a second hand book sale at Baddisley Clinton (NT) last September and had to buy it. My Mum read it to me when I was about 4/5 Watkins-Pitchford did a lot of illustrations for his own and others books. His love of the countryside is clear in both his writing and drawings. Looking forward to 'Grey Seas Under' now Rog

As to route yes as I said in another post you opted to go what we call 'the moors road', which btw had/has one of the worst accident rates in the county at one time.

We first drove the Helmsley to Stokesley road B1257. The only time before I drove along that (in the same direction South to North) was in 2002. It was foggy and we went past 19 dead sheep in the road, where motorists just slammed into them and carried on their merry way. Not very nice. I didn't hit any, being a careful and considerate person I've been lurking about in that area now & then - 1980 camped on Castleton village green in the snow, 1986 I put people from Helsinki City Transport on the train Whitby to Danby and drove by myself in the minibus to take them on from Danby to Richmond. 1984 I took the train myself to Middlesborough and ended up sleeping in Barnard Castle in a pub (and then walked from Middleton-in-Teesdale to Dufton and Alston along the Pennine Way). Along the Esk valley a few other times, and I used to work with another driver whose surname was Eskdale. Got to stop at the pub in Church Houses 5 years ago (April 2013), The Feversham Arms - had been on my list for a few years and finally got there when it was open. Game pie with pheasant in it. The Feversham Arms, Church Houses, North York Moors

The b1257 is a fave with bikers (Nick might know it).
Helmesley is a favourite stop off for a cream tea or a pint in the feathers.
We often take the caravan there even though it's not far.

I used to be really ace at spelling..but now with the arrival of American spell checker on my computer and new words evolving mixed in with me getting older, I fear a slippery slope to any letters that sound right being chucked together....
