I get the idea it might be a good idea to try cleaning up my diesel tank a bit. I haven't done it since I've had the boat, and I don't know if it has ever been done. I thought that I would pump out a couple of litres from the bottom of the tank into a clear plastic pop bottle and check it for water, and if it was all water, to keep on pumping out until diesel appeared, then to pump the remainder of the diesel into a 20l drum and syphon it back into the tank, filtering it two or three times on the way.
Has anyone done this? How much crud was there in the tank? Any advice welcome.

my diesel tank on Sabina H has the deep sea system where there is a sump in the tank, about 12" diameter and about 9" deep with a drain tap in the bottom. With that I just drain a bit into a glass jar every now and then, usually get a pint or so of water and occasionally some dirt as well, I have not found any trace of the dreaded fuel bug
The Yoghurt pot has what I presume to be the normal inland waterway system with no drain. At the start of a cruising season I syphon from as near the bottom as possible the water and crap out. up till now I have had no problems with the bug but this season there was a trace of black thready jelly, I added a biocide to this tank full, In the winter I might comment further
