Apparently CRT have cancelled two stoppages in my area (east London). Both of them were for gate or paddle works/replacement on locks which are in a poor condition.
Is this happening everywhere ? It does seem worrying.
Yes yes I know !

When I saw this I did think if it should have read After a review of the projected costs of completing the repairs to the bridge, we have decided to allow it to collapse into the canal and then pick up the bricks as this will be cheaper. For this reason this closure has been cancelled and the works deferred. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.

We were looking at bridge 75 on the north Oxford, and discussing between ourselves, that a closure for the repair works seemed excessive, but maybe there were underlying issues one couldn't see. A few days later the stoppage was cancelled. I wonder if that stoppage was listed just to coincide with the new bridge being constructed at Clifton, rather than a necessity in it's own right, and they just thought better of it. The damage doesn't look any worse than the bridge near Onley that the WRG repaired/rebuilt without a stoppage a few winters ago. When money is tight is when we need to have ultimate confidence in C&RT management. Several self inflicted wounds to their feet make this tricksy don't you think Rog

That's why I put in my last sentence kris As it happens I may not remain on the cut for more longer anyway but I do care and would like to see the system survive in case my children would like to use it.

we were supposed to have a week long stoppage here for them to replace a (long since disused) swing bridge - ramsdens..
The old one has been taken away - "work" fencing erected, (including "smoking and mobile phone zones" but SOD all sign of a canal closure... nor sign-age indicating when it MIGHT actually happen...

Meanwhile you'll just have to traipse up all them steps, walk over the bridge, struggle down the other side, just to get to the bins. Life is a bitch!

I LIKE going over the bridge... it's certainly a lot easier than mooring, opening swing bridge, chugging through, walking back, closing bridge chugging to bins and reversing the procedure... grrrr

I was talking to a CRT man working on a lock today. One of the canceled stoppages. One of two crew was running a sander over lock gate seal surfaces (mitre) to try to solve a leakage problem. "No money" to do a full closure drain lock check the pots etc. The way the mitres didn't meet looked to me like a nackered pot causing the gate to lean but I know nuffink. And there are no breast irons protecting the mitre on the lock gates. . Apparently the other scheduled stoppage which was for cill and paddle repairs is going to be just a diver operation to do something to a paddle. That way if people close both sets of gates they "get away with it" despite a major problem on the top gate cill needing stop planks above the lock to have a proper butchers at it. Divers? What the fuck is going on here? Apparently they have no stop planks and they have to be made for the job. Hardly rocket science but there we are. Its fucked

There's one notice, shut for 5 weeks for "gate relining and paddle repairs". Either they're whittling it with a penknife or the notice writer is a numpty and meant realignment, or the spell checker software made it a nonsense. I'll try and find out. Or, to suit this thread better, they booked 5 weeks but the scope of works has since been reduced to penknife whittling.

There was a diver required at Woodnook Lock (Aire & Calder) last August. I wonder what his hourly rate is?

I guess a diver is cheaper than made to order stop planks but what I don't understand is why stop planks are not standard items. Its obvious they will be needed now and then to perform basic lock maintenance. Stop off the top of the lock for working on top gates and cill or both ends for the bottom gates and pump excess water out from the sump hole. I've seen this done in the not particularly distant past. What has happened to stop this being done? Is it is some sort of elfin safety bullshit ??
