What is the best sort of rope? It depends. For me at the mooriung, large-ish nylon for bow and stern lines, and smaller polysteel for springs. Have to say that spending some quality time learning about rope types, mooring methods and knots should pay off well, hate to say it but some long term boaters and even liveaboards seem to be a bit too clueless on this.

Needle and palm is nice and secure and looks good too. And I like splicing (3 strand). I taught myself these as well as most useful knots when I was a teenager. From Cyrus Day's ropework book. I also like making up manrope knots for some things. I have made a set of fenders using old techniques (the traditional way by using up old rope like they did on Thames barges) but nothing more fancy. Not keen on decorative just functional stuff really. Anyway i've decided on 10mm staplespun pp for the yot as its only a small boat and I really like this type of rope as it floats and is easy to hold doesn't get slippery. Eta I was rather pleased to find a proper old school sailmakers needle in a charity shop recently. Its about 4 inches long with "made in england" stamped into it. 50p. Bargain.
