A fridge running off the cooling circuit of the engine would be nice. I don't know how it (fridge) all works. On a water cooled engine there is a cold side (water in) and a hot side (water out) so i would have thought something could be arranged. Obviously the existing ones run of the alternator but on smaller units this places quite a large load on the engine whereas using he cooling circuit would be "free" energy.

Gas fridge? No power worries.
I had a 12v coolbox once that wouldn't run without the engine running. It was supposed to work down to 10.5v. If you do get one I advise hooking it up pronto to check why it's still in good order to return.

I have a waeco crx80 12v fridge for sale if you decide to go the whole hog. Same kind of power consumption, removable ice box. Probably too big...

I mean really well chilled beer on a hot July day for example. I'm going to need a cool box in my yot for beer so this thread is a cool one to keep an eye on ! To be fair for limited use age bags of ice from supermarket in a cool box would probably be enough. Would be nice to have a compact efficient electric one though.

always surprises me that fridges and cool boxes are big consumers of leccy........ We all know that it requires loads of energy to heat things up, so why can't an inventor find a way to harness all the heat removed by a refrigeration process and then use that heat energy to power the thing? Perhaps a clever adaptation of the ecofan principle. In theory it should be possible, because the process releases stored energy from the foodstuffs but then just wastes it to the atmosphere. You obviously need to listen to this 👍🍻

Do you mean the whole of the interior gets properly cold or just the ice shelf?
I hate frozen beer but very cold is ideal in summer.

Whole of the interior, we had a RM 212 that had a little ice box with a wee ice cube tray, you could just about get a small box of fish fingers in there! Our current fridge is a Waeco (Dometic -nee Electrolux) it's pretty good, never suffer warm beer or flat batteries - but many parts are unobtainable so if the burner dies it's scrap.
