One crucial item missing from the list of necessaries, for the stove, is a pricker to clear the jet. Tilleys are self pricking. I was rooting through our miscellaneous key bowl t'other day and found one in the bottom. The trick to lighting them is to get the vapouriser hot enough, be patient, wait until the meths has nearly gone, then it doesn't flare up. Until you make a mistake! Take it outside to light - there is a reason the oldies did so.

I think Jim was attempting to introduce some humour by using slightly rude words like pricker for example which might make people giggle a bit. I see no harm in that and will not hold it against him.
I know that prickers are something you find in paraffin burners but the reference to bottom took the topic away from the original subject.
