ok so yesterday, we all got an email from the new moorings manager (pleasant young chap) as follows: Good morning Just a polite notice to ask you all to please be considerate to the needs of everyone on site (boaters and non-boaters alike). Please be mindful of smoke from stoves and exhaust fumes and also noise from engines and generators, especially when moored. You are not permitted to run your engine or generator whilst moored up before 8am or after 8pm, unless you are moored in isolation and out of earshot of other people. We do not intend this rule to stop you moving the boat from the mooring. Please see our license terms and conditions for more details. canalrivertrust.org.uk/media/library/5962.pdf Finally, I appreciate this may not apply to everyone on site, so please accept my apologies if this email is not relevant to you. Thank you for your co-operation with these matters. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. Kind regards, Bradley Cahill Mooring Sales Manager (North East) Well our lot are up in arms about it... NOT the engine/generator running thing but the bit about smoke from fires. There's trouble brewing I tell ya!

I was moored near a boat the other day, that was belching out thick brown smoke which was masking the canal it was so dense.
A passing boater was speculating whether he was burning a sheep!
I only burn smokeless fuel so it wouldn't worry me unduly.
However I know loads of people who gather and burn wood. It must be almost impossible to keep the wood to season and dry on a boat for as long as is required.
I guess that's why you see really smokey chimneys.

Seems a perfectly pleasant an reasonable email to me. It is all about being considerate. Some people do take the piss with what they burn, although I’ve no idea whether anyone on your mooring does. It’s probably a generic message sent to all CRT moorers. Just carry on being considerate.

The problem with 'scatter gun' emails like this is that they create bad feeling when people are not the offenders.
Surely a more targeted approach aimed at actual offenders would be better, after all it's not too hard to identify them, pop down from CRT Towers and have a gentle word or leave a letter on a boat???

Rog Well, even "smokeless" fuel throws off a lot of smoke/steam when it's first put on the stove especially if it has not been stored under cover, such as on the boat roof.

It’s a no-win situation. If you target people you are accused of victimisation, false accusation, “where is your proof” etc. At least with a scatter gun approach you offend everybody equally. Which is very PC!

Believe me, there's a world of difference between a newly lit or mended fire, and whatever the hell that boat was burning.
And of course the steam/smoke from a newly lit fire or wet smokeless is gone within 20 mins.
His was like a fog machine all day.

But as is being said, all stoves smoke badly for a short while after refuelling. The question is whether the smoke dies down after 15 mins, or whether it persists. And how noxious it is, which is hard to tell from looking at it.

Problem with that approach is you risk harassment accusations. And yes I have been on the receiving end of a police visit following my attempts to stop a nuisance - I only won the battle because the other party was a really nasty person. Limited budgets of 'authorities' were the main reason for the initial inaction.

People need to man up a bit.

You have no choice but to accept the e mail. Whether you like/agree with it is another matter. Some of us feel guilty, even when common sense suggests we have no reason to. I liken the above e mail to the incorrect overstay texts I have received. They are an irritation, and annoyance, and in my case inaccurate (as I'm sure the e mail directed at Quaysider was). If the response when queried is "Oh don't worry about it, it's not important" Why send the damn things out in the first place. Sorry, rant over Rog
