I am considering fitting an auto pump to the yot. It doesn't really need one as it's a very dry boat but probably worth putting one in.
Its got a nice big Whale diaphragm pump in there which does the required job.
So are there any recommendations?
I did get a Johnson one with some sort of magic infernal water sensor for another boat but it seems to be shite.
I wondered about the Whale SuperSub .

On the old tub I used to have the main big bastard pump which meant a trip to the engine room to engage it so I eventually fitted one of the large Rule pumps with a separate float switch and a tell tale activation light in the wheel house. It was more than capable and meant the 40 year old big bastard one wasn't used too often. Remember with yots, if your on a tack which means your skin fittings go under you need non-return valves on the pipes or you could fill up the bilge quicker than expected Ive found Rule pumps do a decent job and cheap enough to just replace if they do go wrong......I hate changing impellers

Thanks for that. You may have missed it as you were absent from the forum for a while but my yot is a Colvic 20 motoryot. No rags or sticks Its nice that you are back on board

don't like the ones with the built in sensor switch
a separate float switch is better IMHO
although because they are not now allowed to use mercury in their manufacture they are not as reliable as they were.

That's interesting about the mercury switches. Was not aware of that. I wonder if its worth looking for an old school float switch then and link it to a modern pump.

No rags or sticks Its nice that you are back on board oooo, I went to look at an old Colvic a few moons ago down at Littlehampton. It had an old BMC and a mast stepped to the coach roof but as I was looking for a livaboard it was just a tad too cosy for my ample needs so I bought a 30'Kent class motorsailor instead. The Colvic is a good boat if you want a bit of extended coastal cruising

Just stick with the pump you've got and get a separate float switch. I don't know how the mercury ones worked, mine has some type of steel roller in it which runs down a peaked track, it seems simple enough.

Sorry wasn't clear in the original post. Boat is fitted with a large whale hand operated diaphragm pump. Good bit of kit (the yellow aluminum bodied one) but as it is not electric I had been considering putting an auto in there "just in case"

Then a visit to Sandwich and then a quick chug over to Dunkirk for croissants and cheese
