I know its all a bit iffy and the bs scheme might not like it but has anyone had any experience with gas lights? I mean mantle type lights which are plumbed into a calor supply. Sort of thing you sometimes see in caravans. I was just thinking it might be a useful alternative option for an off grid boat so as to have some light without using up the battery.I remember the old camping gaz lights they were rather good.

they are very bright - and the mantles are very fragile and require replacing occasionally. what else do you want to know?

Well other things are: they put out quite a bit of heat. They are a bit noisy, but it’s a somewhat soothing roar. Very similar to a Tilley lamp so you might be better with one of those.

I would much ra ther have LED lights that use rechargeable batteries. Peter.

I doubt you would get away with retro fitting them.

Fitted out a campervan with them, also had caravans years ago, Mum and Dad's, with them in. Great, heat and light, but also H2O vapour in the air. Old caravans had single glass windows, so condensation by the bucket load. I'd go for a 100 / 150 w flexi stick down solar panel and mppt controller and led lights. I had no trouble on our last winter trip, 12w from outboard, solar still doing a bit, no problems with a couple of leds, phone charging and a radio. What more do you need? Leave your hair curlers and dryer at home.
Here's a belated thought, if allowed in bss, gas lights may need a flame failure device.

I've got solar, 12v diesel generator, wind, large alternator on engine and LED lights etc already but quite fancy a gas light as well.
The delicate mantle thing could be a problem in a boat used in locks I suppose.

I had an alladin lamp with mantle years ago but never really enjoyed the smell of the paraffin.
I suppose if its a newly fitted unit then would probably need an ffd yes.

I had two of these Alladin lamps once. Let them go with a boat I sold. I didn't like the smell of paraffin so they did not get much use. Non pressurised but with a mantle they did glow very nicely. I would definitely like a gas lamp with the gentle hissing and bright light and no smell. I think it would be excellent.

I was told if you add castor oil or rose oil ?? It can cut the smell out of normal paraffin. I did do some experiments but can't remember if it made any difference.

What's wrong with having a couple of these? So long as you're in the boat with them when they're on, and are sensible, have them on a proper surface (one in the kitchen sink?), and turn them off if you leave the boat. If they're good enough to be inside a tent, why not inside a boat?
