I have 3 filters on Joyce, first is the fuel guard straight out of the tank, second is a 296 then its a spin on filter. I clean the fuel guard about twice a year, replace the 296 once a year and the spin on every other year. The way I look at is how much is a fuel pump and injectors?

The way I look at is how much is a fuel pump and injectors? £25 a pot and upwards of £160 depending on the pump. The scariest one I had done was an Irska pump for a Kubota, heads or tails, bugger all money (£80) or loads a money (£600+) thankfully it was £80! We have a very good firm in Wellingborough who are the best around and not dear, other so called diesel specialist send the stuff they can't do including all the ancient old crap to them. I have zero faith in the lotions and potions that get tipped in to the tanks of boats, never needed it on our plant so can't see the point in a boat. Again, a reliable regular supplier that looks after their fuel stock is a great help. Not so easy if you have to get your fuel from canal/riverside. Top tip though, try to use a yard that has a busy hire fleet, at least that way they turn their fuel over reasonably regularly.

Yes, I think that's what I had jotted down. What's 95 Euros when you've saved 600?

The way I look at is how much is a fuel pump and injectors? Yeah, 'specially when we only have 1 injector!

And NAME and SHAME the shitty boatyards that sell DIRTY fuel ! So that we won't call there!

I have my suspicions where it was from but without solid proof and at the risk of buggering an otherwise good relationship I'll keep quiet. I will say if you're buying on the Nene I would only consider the following:- en-gb.facebook.com/fuelboatbletchley/Nick has used Alan's services. Peterborough boating centre, 01733 566688 No website but it's on Stanground back water ideally situated setting off for or arriving back from the Middle Levels. Fox boats in March. www.foxboats.co.uk/They have a busy hire operation, also our bolt hole for the return leg home (£10 for a quite night and a guaranteed spot is a bargain) Never had the need to purchase fuel on the Great Ouse so no recommendations for that part of the world.

Just changed my fuel filters, was no water or sediment in the bowl. One tip for doing these 296-type filters, and I do know people who have been caught out by this, is that although the O rings look the same, they aren't, one is slightly bigger than the other and that one goes at the top. A really good piece of kit for changing these filters (and BMC oil filters) is a dental pick set, firstly to hook the old O rings out and secondly to check with the mirror that the top seal is correctly positioned.
