"It would be fascinating to record the behind-the-scenes work that has to be undertaken for these major events." - what, you mean Bob behind his JCB having a crafty fag?
Why are they worried about protecting badgers when half the farmers in the country are going round shooting and gassing badgers because "they spread bovine tuberculosis" ?
Waterways World Twitter 15th April:
£20,000 donations to Middlewich breach so far - <1% of expected bill of £2m+ - while canal expected to be closed until Christmas
"Says £16,431 on the justgiving website. Perhaps gift aid and other giving make up the difference ..."

Jeez ........ what a complete load of patronising, cringeworthy, PR crap. They really are a complete load of tossers ...... get rid of people like that, doing "Promotional publicity" the saving of their wages and cars and office space and, and, and. would pay for the correct kind of manpower for a Navigation Authority to have repaired the breach by now !!! Jeeez, anybody with any knowledge of the canals would tell them that at some point a major breach will occur and that plans and finances should be permanently in place to deal with such things Get back to their core reason for existence, canal upkeep not promotion of cycling and walkways for ducks ffs

That's just it John they care more about the pr than they do the actual job of maintaining the waterways.

There are some measures that CRT need to meet to get the maximum DEFRA grant, things like towpath visits and condition of towpaths. Don't forget that the DEFRA grant is the single biggest income CRT have. I'm not a fan of the way CRT manage to do anything but I do recognise they need to publicise the canals and keep non-boating visitors increasing.

Why's she wearing a hard hat? In case that crow poops on her? (makes appearance at 0:25) Obviously CRT are going to have to spend a few bob buying her a new hi-viz vest and hard hat when the new logo comes in, rather than wasting it on mending the canal.

Ani Sutton, engagement manager at the Canal and River Trust, said the Trust is doing all it can to get the section opened, adding that they are grateful for public support. “So far, I’ve heard from people potentially planning to wash cars at Tescos, offers of help from Morrisons, support from the council, and others planning local tombola’s" [ sic] www.crewechronicle.co.uk/news/charitys-urgent-appeal-donations-repair-14448770

Phasing new workwear in, or so they keep blarting on social media when you question the costs of this new, dull, polo looking logo.

On Sunday 12 October 1958 the same canal bust a few miles away from this breach, at Church Minshull, and emptied itself over the adjoining fields into the river Weaver. This somewhat smaller breach at Middlewich also emptied the cut into the Weaver, but this time via it's tributary, the river Wheelock, . . and there, sad to say, the similarities end. The Minshull breach, although considerably bigger than the one at Middlewich, was fixed and the cut open to boat traffic again in a shade over 5 weeks. The same length of time having elapsed after this breach occurred and all we've got is one of Parry's vacuous tweenys standing on the towpath, wearing a high-viz waiscoat and a pisspot, vapouring into a camera with the breach itself in the background looking no different from how it did on the first morning after it happened. Sixty years of progress and development have seen the availability of plant and equipment at C&RT's disposal for tackling jobs like this go way beyond the wildest dreams of those tasked with repairing the Minshull breach all that time ago, and yet, after the same period of time it took to fix the Minshull breach and get the canal open again, the clowns who have been appointed to run and maintain our inland waterways have made no tangible progress at all with this one. The Canal & River Trust, and the useless articles that administer and manage it, are a joke, . . . but, a very UNfunny one !

Looked like a sketch from the Catherine Tate show.
Despite all the work going on "behind the scenes" it appears that sweet fanny Adams has been done in terms of actually making progress towards providing a useable waterway and towpath. Why is that ? Is there some sort of legal problem with it or loads of oil under there for fracking or something. Seems very odd to me.
I blame the Russians.

From the IWA newsletter today:
"At a North Wales & Borders Waterway user forum in Nantwich on 17th April CRT attributed the breach to "over-topping", stating that the "freeboard" at the point of the breach had previously been recorded as being a little lower than elsewhere on the embankment, though "not worryingly so". The cause of the over-topping is thought to have been that the paddles at Stanthorne Lock, above the breach, had been raised during the night and left open.
Engineers from CRT and its contractors, Keir, are assessing the means and method of best achieving the repair and currently expect to have a repair schedule available by the end of May. Until then, a date for re-opening the Middlewich Branch is largely speculation, but CRT is talking about it being unlikely before the end of the year and at a cost of £2-3 million."
- so there you are. Broken and really, really, really difficult to repair.

I guess if CRT are working with Keir group they are probably considering a concrete lined channel for the repair. It seems to be the most obvious way to do it but not sure why it would take so long to begin actual works.
