As I was leaving work this afternoon one of the other two drivers from the garage turned up for his lunch break and asked if I'd like to buy his camper van. I said that one of our ideas for later in life was to get one and spend our remaining years pootling round Scandinavia, and that I would have indeed bought it there and then, only we have our boat in England and simply have no use for a camper van at the moment. He showed me inside, and where the batteries are, and how the hot water for the shower works (instant heater - carries 120 litres of water - as comparison our boat carries 850 litres). And how the loo and beds work. Nice and clean, just like new, 7 years old, driven only 80,000km, price 39,000 Euros (£35,000). A car such as a Mazda 6 estate costs about 30,000 Euros new here, so I think 39 for a camper van seems OK. Anyway, I thought I'd take pics just in case anyone here might be interested in buying it - just think, you can spend a few years travelling round Europe, Great Britain too (with headlight portion blanked). Of course the steering wheel is on the 'wrong' side but that doesn't mean anything. I guess the MoT would have to be in Finland once a year as the registration stands. On the way home I was thinking what you could do with such a home-on-wheels; well, you could lurk in the Lofotens for half a year, spend another half a year in Scotland, tour France and Italy sampling wines and cheeses... 'free' accommodation always. The gas cooker has 3 hobs but no oven or grill; I like the fact that we have an oven in our boat. It's also probably a bit chilly in Winter as there's no wood/coal-burning stove, unless you're plugged into 240v and have something like an oil-filled electric radiator or fan-heater. It's a bit like boating I think, only you can drive up mountains to get the views/sunrises/sunsets.

Always fancied camper vans.
My brother had one for over ten years and used to love disappearing into the highlands and islands of Scotland, where wild camping is 'de rigueur' and road traffic is minimal.
Not sure driving is much fun nowadays, and having to largely use caravan sites takes some of the gloss off the idea for me now.

You don't need to use caravan sites. Just moor up anywhere safe and out of sight.

Sounds good in theory.
In England he assured me that virtually every lay by and car park has signs saying no overnight parking.
He did manage some wild parking, but he didn't find it as easy as in Scotland, where there are wide open spaces to disappear into.

Scandinavia is still really empty. You could park in our bus garage yard for 2 years and nobody would give a hoot.

Rog you would be amazed at the amount of camper wild camping that goes on. if I had a camper I would never use a campsite. to be fair i don't really use one with the tent.

I can only go on my brother and a pals experience.
Terrific in theory, but difficult in England.
Scotland is great for wild camping, and France provides areas specifically for it.
England treats everyone like 'travellers' I'm told.

I think some imagination is needed for the 'England problem'. I wonder if some marinas might charge a little for a camper van to be parked somewhere in their area for a few weeks/months - facilities available, nice boaters to get acquainted with. Church car parks for overnights? Out of the way pub car parks? But anyway, the aforementioned camper van for sale is in Finland, all you gotta do is swoop over here, buy it, and then you're set to explore Norway and northern Sweden for a couple of years - then sell it for roughly the same amount. It would suit some retired person ideally. As I said, we have thought about getting such a camping box-on-wheels when we are too old to do anything else. It may have no stove inside, but there are hundreds of beaches and secluded places on which to have a little camp fire and grill sausages.
