We moor at Saltisford at the bottom of the Hatton, so frequently traverse that flight.
We've often seen volunteers on there, but never had the offer of assistance.
They're usually in a 'welcome tent' rather than locking, so I suppose painting is at least an upgrade.

Must be why Braunston is rammed with boats at the moment. Only place on the system with any water left in it. Plenty to be had in fact when I went through!

it's been a farce from start to Almost finish... was supposed to be done 22nd Jan... and they've been buggering about with it since. basically, its SO well balanced now, that people are pushing it TOO hard and it bounces back and knocks them over lol. NO one wanted the fecking thing but rules is rules - apparently. 'Accessibility' maybe. I take it the footbridge is to be demolished. Back to Hebden Bridge, if you decide to turn around, check with CRT about the 2 winding holes upstream of HB as they were full of crud and not navigable. We were advised by a boater and Bronte boat company to turn at the winding hole at HB visitor moorings. they are using the accessibility card to justify it... that and the cyclists cant get their bikes over the footbridge easily one - oh, and apparetnly, some of the money has come from english cycling and the developers who are building the new housing estate on the canal side further up near the flood lock (eventually).... it stinks of cronyism to me but there we go. The foot bridge HAS to stay as it's got services to the houses on it - although they ARE gating it off...and locking it ffs.

ROCHDALE - we give in... you've beaten us. After working Eddie and wendy up from 10 - 14 today (them getting stuck loads of times and muggins here walking miles to run water down) there is no way we can be arsed to do the same ... us being 2 inches deeper than them - apparently 2 inches makes ALL the difference.
SO , we've reversed down the lock back into Hebden basin, filled up with water (and gin) and will begin our shallow descent back to Sowerby bridge tomorrow.
CRT are on standby to respond to us being stuck between 8 and 7 again I'm sure...
Hmmf,
Wakey and the rivers Aire and Calder along with 2 day trips to Leeds - HERE WE COME!

Wise move in my opinion. No marks for artistic impression, or degree of difficulty. Boating should be fun, and if it isn't, move to where it is. Simple as that Whatever you do, don't use the gin to raise the level.....unless it's been 'filtered'. Rog

"Running water down" is an interesting topic. I wonder if there is any reference to this in the bye laws governing canal usage. I guess it would not have been necessary in a well maintained efficiently run commercial canal system but I would have expected some mention of it. Something like you are not allowed to operate paddles at a lock which you are not in the process of moving through. Obviously that would make walking ahead to set locks in flights a bit awkward and "lock wheeling". NigelMoore will know

Obviously that would make walking ahead to set locks in flights a bit awkward and "lock wheeling". NigelMoore will know No specialist knowledge of esoteric legislation is necessary - everybody can read the current, generally applicable byelaws as published here - www.britishwaterways.co.uk/media/documents/foi/legal/BW_General_Canal_Bye-laws.pdf There is nothing governing such use of locks as suggested. The closest the 1965 General Canal Byelaws come to it would be – 25. No person shall: (a) Open or close or attempt to open or close the gate of any lock except by the means provided for that purpose or before the water is level on both sides of the gate. (b) Draw or operate any sluices until the lock-gates are closed. (c) Operate or leave open any sluice so as to waste water. (d) Operate any sluice otherwise than by means of the handle or other device normally used for that purpose. Then there are the earlier Gloucester & Sharpness Byelaws 1962, which prohibit ANY use of a lock unless specifically authorised - www.britishwaterways.co.uk/media/documents/foi/legal/Bye_laws_for_G_and_S_Severn.pdf 49. No person, unless authorised by the Commission so to do, shall operate or interfere with any lock, lock gate, sluice, by-pass, dam, weir, bridge or any other work connected with, affecting or forming part of the canal.
Same goes for the Ouse & Foss Byelaws 1979 – www.britishwaterways.co.uk/media/documents/foi/legal/Bye-laws_for_River_Ouse_and_Foss_Navigation.pdf 1979 45. No person shall . . . (e) unless authorised by the Trustees operate or interfere with any lock gate, sluice, bridge or any other work connected with affecting or forming any part of the Navigation;Whereas the 1996 Docklands Byelaws contain nothing to do with lock operation - www.britishwaterways.co.uk/media/documents/foi/legal/Bye_laws_London_Docklands-print.pdf

Talking to The Man yesterday at Summit, part of the problem is that United Utilities decided to work on both reservoirs above Summit at the same time, so only 1.2 million gallons a day is going in, not the 2million that should be. He would like to reinstate the feeder channel from Hollingworth Lake to Summit, pump it up as they used to, about 30 ft, to the feeder channel and it flows round the contours about 2 miles to the Summit level. He blames the management.

It's not 'wheeling' on the Worcester & Birmingham Canal, but I can't think of the term right now.
