I remember years ago (would have been early naughties so about 15 years ago) I was out in my kayak and at the time I had a dog who liked swimming. Nice day for it so I went for a paddle and did some activities around thowing balls and dog jumping in water. It was near Milton Keynes so on the cut not the Thames. Eta just remembered it was near Grafton Regis. Nice part of the GU. Anyway there was a bloke on a narrow boat and I specifically avoided being a nuisance to him as I know about that and I try to do unto others etc but when I paddled back to my boat he put his head out his side door and said "this isn't a public playground". despite the fact I had actually been pretty considerate and not caused him a nuisance. This got me thinking about it. Err It is a public playground . Get on with it. If you don't like it get a caravan and it won't happen . It is annoying though. I hate the plebs but I suspect I won't be able to play with my train set for much longer unless I let the plebs look at it as well It is possible that they arrrr going to be the saviours of the cut.

It's PR for a government beg. Hordes of plebs aren't going to overwhelm the towpath, there aren't enough parking spaces.
Back in the 80's the AA did a survey and found something like 98% of people going out into the countryside never get further than a mile from their cars. That was a long time ago but I bet there hasn't been much change. Canal towpaths ain't that great unless you have a boat or like fishing.

Or riding a bicycle like your life depends on journey time minimisation.

What would be really handy would be to have some permanently moored accomodation vessels like canal based b&b units. Its a bit awkward on narrow boats but it is not insurmountable.

Although.... I have suggested to someone I know who has been to England with us a couple of times, is that as he is so enthused to visit England again, how about him walking along towpaths? You can walk and walk and walk... from Oxford to Skipton, from Llangollen to Leicester. Tent and sleeping bag, and a hotel/B&B once every third night. Not a bad way to see the country, canals, and meet weird people (boaters). We met an Austrian guy doing just that on the Huddersfield Broad last summer. Easy going all the way if you want.

In my experience if you put on a large rucksack and walk along the towpath most boaters consider you weirder than their fellow boaters! <iframe style="position: absolute; width: 27.279999999999973px; height: 3.6000000000000085px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none;left: 15px; top: -5px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_91915664" scrolling="no" width="27.279999999999973" height="3.6000000000000085"></iframe> <iframe style="position: absolute; width: 27.28px; height: 3.6px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 1300px; top: -5px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_79863748" scrolling="no" width="27.279999999999973" height="3.6000000000000085"></iframe> <iframe style="position: absolute; width: 27.28px; height: 3.6px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 15px; top: 120px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_48399460" scrolling="no" width="27.279999999999973" height="3.6000000000000085"></iframe> <iframe style="position: absolute; width: 27.28px; height: 3.6px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 1300px; top: 120px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_87440932" scrolling="no" width="27.279999999999973" height="3.6000000000000085"></iframe>

I'll see what I can do tomorrow, only pic I can recall that shows the rucksack and canal is when we sheltered under the M4 after a very wet day following the M&B canal. Only boater that I spoke to (more than a nod/hello) on that walk was somewhere around Middlewich and then only because they had passed me much further north. See what I can come up with tomorrow...
