I saw a C&RT alert recently 'reminding' everyone that wide beams had to book passage through the tunnels. Do you by any chance know what if anything prompted such a reminder? Rog You always get the odd Muppet taking a chance, and I suspect one or two have tried darting through without booking. I've never heard anyone admit to, or seen one doing it, so I'm a bit cynical of the statements. There is a campaign by the local busybody to stop widebeams completely, or charge them for her services of providing assistance. I guess faking a few incidents would help her cause. Ah yes, Katharine.

I'm okay with Blissworth and indeed all tunnels except Harecastle. Hate the middle section of that one where the roof dips down. Rog Conversely, every time I go through a tunnel with Chris, I always say to her itβs akin to the life most sperm have in slow motion. ...there is no hope for me... ππ€£ππ€£π The stuff running through your head at times is worrying!

HaHa, I bet you haven't done Standedge! Or even Gorsty Hill (which has a very low mid-section, but doesn't drip much). This is a proper "middle section with the roof dipping down"!

For what itβs worth, I think the existing arrangement is cool. Letβs face it, there have been a few muppet narrow boaters holding up other boaters in the tunnels! Takes me 23 minutes end to end. Fuckin hate it in there. Put it in 1st gear and hide under the duvet.

My record for Braunston is passing five opposing boats in there. Wide beams at least don't have to contend with that. But I have watched wide beams in tunnels and thought it must be quite a trial of concentration, particularly the twist in Braunston. Rog On a widebeam, just go flat out. The water displacement from the bow hits the walls and helps keep the boat straight. And if you meet a narrowboat I am sure you will just sink it.......................

I STILL hate all tunnels... Patty can vouch for that - she and Andy hid up front whilst I got into my "special place" with my carpenters CD on loud at the steering end and though calm thoughts until daylight appeared.
NOT looking forward to Standege at all... or Harecastle next year.

I like tunnels. I have not done blisworth in either of my current canal boats (9ft beam and 12ft beam) but when I had a narrow boat I went through many times and specially enjoyed going through slowly with no lights on to see if the ghosts would come out of the ventilation shafts and openings.
I did get one once but the engine scared them off. I'd love to go through in a silent boat.
