At the end of the day there probably is more value in it and seeing as money is all anyone wants its bound to happen. That's exactly why the canals were constructed in the first place. Do you think the navvies and boat drivers got decent pay from the canal companies? They even had 'stop locks' at the end of their systems to prevent another canal from stealing 'their' water. The whole canal system is nothing but a monument to... err... monumental greed! The IWA do seem to be genuinely interested in the maintenance and restoration of canals, so I may throw them another subscription at the end of this year so their volunteers can have some chocolate biscuits to go with their tea. The IWA do produce some fine-looking Christmas cards, too.

What’s happening now is that a business disguised as a charity is struggling to maintain the legacy that was handed down to them.

What’s happening now is that a business disguised as a charity is struggling to maintain the legacy that was handed down to them. They're not struggling at all, they're not even trying. A business is there for the benefit of its shareholders, nothing more. It's all bungs to sub-contractors and Sally the in-house graphic designer coming up with more olive green duck signs. Just like a charity, as a matter of fact, all in it for themselves. (Apart from Jim's charity which is completely different kind of charity).
