It's in The Daily Mail today...! "A member of the public who left a canal-lock open causing £3million worth of damage is likely to get away scot-free as there is no CCTV to identify them. The Canal and River Trust, a charity that receives £50million a year from the tax payer, is footing the bill after the lock was left open sending millions of gallons of water gushing along the picturesque Shropshire Union Canal." "£50 million of tax money given to those who have money to buy barges. Something wrong here." "A bit like the NHS having to spend 6 BILLION a year correcting botched plastic surgery carried out abroad in places like Turkey." "A member of the public who left a canal-lock open causing £3million worth of damage is likely to get away scot-free as there is no CCTV to identify them." - so how is it that CRT are sure a 'member of the public' did it? It woz the badgers wot dunnit, sez I! Read all abaht it! www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6151069/Forgetful-member-public-left-canal-lock-gates-open-caused-3million-worth-damage.html

The canals should be able to cope with the odd paddle left up, the by washes should cope with that sort of flow. But if no one checks that embankments are in need of maintenance, well, let's just blame some boater.

Of course the daily mail will publish any old shit, as we well know, it being rammed into our eyes frequently.

A lie's been round the world twice before the truth's got its boots on.

Of course the daily mail will publish any old shit, as we well know, it being rammed into our eyes frequently. On this occasion it is garbage, but we all know where the garbage has come from - has anyone seen any evidence of this person who managed, with the power of Mighty Thor, to open both bottom and top gates at the same time? Were both top gate(s) and bottom gate(s) discovered open at the same time, or is this a complete fabrication? I don't know why CRT don't just say it was fairies, or leprechauns, or goblins, or hobbits. Anything but their lack of devotion to maintenance.

Seems a Mr Andy Johnson of crt is making statements about boats being lifted onto dry land and trees being swept away.
It’s funny because when I asked crt where these story’s are getting there sources from the pointed to a link on their website, it would seem they are lying again.
I wonder if this warrants raising with the ipso, you can’t just lay the blame on somebody with no proof, you can’t just hide important facts like reports of leaks long before the breach...

That lock has been leaking badly for more years than I can remember - with failing concrete sides at the bottom for about as long.
The field to the side (site of said flood?) was under water this time last year. Do agree that three or four hire boat companies send their new victims at speed that way - wasn't that why BW did a modification at Wardle to slow them down a tad...?
eta - no CCTV for any of that though so I might have imagined it.... but off to watch Universally Challenged now for a real cerebral test .....

Maybe Foxy would like to open up communication with his fav newspaper and cut n paste some alternative views to them ref Shropshire Canal and lock gate scenario... All to easy to 'blame' a non specific boater...in putting blame elsewhere distracts from the finger of blame being pointed at them.. Just like what lots of others do.. Why own up in this ever increasing litigation/blame culture society that we live in? ...deny deny deny

Plausable deniability is what they are going for. As they are the authority with access to all the evidence etc. How can anybody else prove what they are sayings is wrong. Okay local boaters will know the truth , but the lies about this mystery boater are already circulating.

Let’s face it, how much action are boaters taking at the moment to pressure CRT into doing more to maintain the infrastructure? In the future will Mr Parry be seen as the man who protected and grew our heritage, or the man who let the navigation fall apart under his watch? I suppose to be fair, the answer to that question depends on the true state of the navigation when it got handed over from BWB. I suspect there were plenty of time bombs waiting to go off.

Yes I've been hearing this rhetoric for a while now. We can help shape the future, the people who are aware of what's happening to the waterways have a duty to publicise what the reality is. Otherwise your are part of the problem not the solution and as culpable as cart. ps nothing you have said excuses cart from getting the lies published about this incident.
