Crt have replaced top lock gates at actons lock. Long overdue. Good I hear you say. But they have put in much shorter balance beams no doubt to pacify dickhead cyclists who found the beams were extending into their path (the towpath) All it does is make the lock heavier. I don't mind the extra work but once the lock gate wears no maintenance etc its going to get very heavy Its a lock on the regents section of the Grand Union. This sort of thing boils my piss

I have found that Twitter complaints get a much quicker response - if you can be arsed to use it!

I'm very upset about it because peterboat called me Rog. I will put a photo up of the offending lock when tinypic is working.

I'm not going to pursue this as there is a risk of me making a rod for my own back !

This is the lock. The beams are too short. I suppose I was a bit spoilt earlier in the week on the upper Thames where the beams are excessively long but at the end of the day the balance beams in this lock have been shortened because of cyclists. I dislike this principle.

Now all you've got to do is make a complaint to cart.

If it is essential for beams to be shortened then they could have made them the same as the lock in the Stort at Harlow near the Moorhen(?) club. (presume it is still the same as it was in 80's/90's) It is so close to a wall the balance beam has a bend halfway along to allow more leverage without full length

As they are called "balance beams" its also about the weight so in theory if they are weighed right then it won't make much difference.
I remember a BW bloke telling me years ago that the guide was for lock gates to be comfortably opened or closed by a fit 13 year old girl. This was the first time I had really noticed that the shortening of the beams appears to be a way of allowing smoother cycle and pedestrian traffic. I suppose I may have just been grumpy about it but it seems too short to me.
To clarify I did not have any issues opening or closing the gates in this instance.
