New gates are often a bit heavy until worn in. The problem here was that the beams have been deliberately shortened to provide more room for cyclists.

Would setting up a petition be worthwhile & include wording such as "wellbeing" of boaters? I would have thought if the beam has been shortened the ends no longer align with the traction treads (grips) on the ground thus possibly causing a health & safety issue if someone should slip while attempting to open or close the lock gate.

This is the lock. The beams are too short. I suppose I was a bit spoilt earlier in the week on the upper Thames where the beams are excessively long but at the end of the day the balance beams in this lock have been shortened because of cyclists. I dislike this principle. you could pop this up on Twitter..I think with the increased letter count it'd fit and just put CRT so it'd get their attention...or miss out the 'I suppose ....long' and add in the name of the lock. If Twitter works best..have a go. I know my niece took to Twitter with a dispute and it was resolved pretty quick.

H and S ..another worthwhile phrase in the fight for fairness..

I'm with Patty here - these days I Tweet directly at them first... that way it's in the public domain instantly and public/peer pressure means they have to "do" something about it at once-... companies these days employ customer service (an oxi moron if ever) to "run" the twitter accounts and put a lid on embarrassing postings asap.

Looking at older pictures it did have short beams before but I think they are now a bit shorter. Possibly only 3 or 4 inches but that makes all the difference or so the woman keeps yelling me.
Its the principle that annoys me. The fact that priority is being given to cyclists who just want to wreck the ambiance by racing about like knobheads. If anything they should make the beams longer as a traffic calming measure.
Yes I know its London but the regents section of the Grand Union is a beautiful canal.

I like that section of the Regents canal..its my regular roaming ground when I visit son..but it is horrific commuter cycle times.. Sadly hes cancelled my next childminding stint..apparently they r 'sorted' Now seems as if it'll be early Nov with daughter and grand daughter so my solo wanders won't be allowed..I'm trying to organise to stay down couple extra days but of course all now dependent on what happens here...which is ATM nothing...
