Anybody using linux mint rather than windows as a platform. Windows is just getting worse by the day.

I've used a version of Ubuntu for a long time, well about 5 years. But I haven't run mint I'm afraid. But if it ts anything like Ubuntu I'd recommend it, I would never run a Windows powered device again.

Cheers Kris. I think it's based on Ubuntu. Will give it a try.

Yes the most annoying thing is that the computer sits off for hours, then when you turn it on, well obviously that's because you want to use it! So it chooses that moment to divert a huge amount of resource to updating, making things grind to a halt. After a fair bit of fiddling I did however manage to get it to only notify me of updates. I choose when to download and install them, and now the problem has gone away. When I have finished doing what I want to do, rather than turn it off I just let it get on with the updates. This of course is how it should be out of the box. But isn't. i have to use Windows because I have the gliding club database on MSAccess and it runs a lot of VBA code. You can’t do this on other platforms using the freeware office programs like libreoffice.

I only use it for watching DVDs and buisiness receipts so it can wait a while longer.

Strange to say I updated my computer's Windows 10 this morning - took about half an hour. I notice some differences with the text and the way things are laid out. Have managed with Windows 10 since it came out, I can't think of any problems I've had with it.
Well, that was interesting.

Have played with Ubuntu etc over the years, we currently have a win 10 laptop, cos swmbo doesn't do unfamiliar tech. However I have a chromebook for my daily stuff, works a treat, updates install in the background, just needs a restart when I'm ready. It does rely on tinternet however, though docs etc can be saved and worked on offline. Last time I looked at. Linux, installed on a USB stick, it required far less user knowledge than in the past, which it needs to if its to become useable by the general public.

A registry setting to do with group policy. I’ll see if I can find out/remember what it was. The metered internet connection thing doesn’t really work. Edit: I think it was option 3 here: www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2015/08/26/windows-10-how-to-stop-forced-updates/#146a30bd46f6
