People are taking offence because there are white people wearing dreadlocks; this apparently is cultural appropriation and insulting.
Black people have been straightening their hair as long as I can remember and I don't think anyone has felt offended by it. Is there a difference?

What insulting to the Black Community? I don't think there is a difference though I think dreadlocks at one time identified the Black (RASTA) community more than straight hair ever identified the Caucasian community.

Just as an aside,I went out with an African Doctor for a few years and she would not consider going out with a West Indian as they believed that they had got rid of all the undesirables to the Slave Traders and therefore were beneath her. I remembered her during the BBC Black History Week because my perception and the BBC portrayal was that we rolled up in a schooner and kidnapped them. A very complex interface I think.

How about tattoos then? As far as I know they originate from Polynesia. Were the Spice Girls being inappropriate in their appropriation by hero worship in our celebrity culture of this ancient art for the benefit of first chavs, followed by cool dudes?

Could it be said the Rastas appropriated there use of "the herb" from the indentured Indian labourers who took the seeds to the caribean. Or in fact the wearing of dreadlocks which could be said to have originated with Lord shiva.
