If you like, I can have a look for the kind of cheap pump we use, and post one to you. We have bought ours in Finland, they're Made in Taiwan but seem to work fine. Cost about 20 Euros. You can probably find them in England too, but, as they say, a pump in the hand is worth 2 Andybergs in the bush.
But... what does your engine manual have to say about this?

You ought to treat yourself to a 2L model given the frequency you change your oil, it would certainly earn it's keep and pay back would be in a matter of weeks rather than years

Happy as we are, thanks. I am particularly pleased I found the right bore plastic tubing to go down the poxy dipstick hole, I had to do a lot of walking on a hot Summer's day to hunt that down. I bought a few metres so we have enough to last for 10 years. Whoever designed the method of changing oil on a Bukh is a plonker and deserves red hot mooring pins stuck into their eyes.

Does the engine not have a "sump pump"? I'm not convinced by the validity of them anyway but they do simplify the process. Obviously Foxy Is The Oil Guy but other than that there are ball shaped suction pumps and some cylinder shaped ones which can be used to pull sump oil out of the dipstick hole. Can you explain what you mean by this (highlighted bit)? Now got a feeling the engine does have a sump pump, but will check with someone who is on the marina and knows far more than I ever will. Just trying to understand views of different people.

A vacuum extractor will get nearly all of it out. As an example, both mouse Perky and my brothers Thornycroft BMC will not fully empty the sump by the engine sump pump. A full (as near as dam it!) oil change can only be done using a vacuum extractor. mouse has been dispatched with all speed to Littleport with my Sealey unit ready for me to give Vanguard a bit of love for a quite winter period.

Thanks @gazza and @magnetman for posting/responding. Makes sense to me.
Next question; any thoughts on whether an anti-freeze tester is useful or not?

Yes, if you don't have a correctly calibrated finger and taste buds A dip of the finger and a quick taste will give an experienced antifreeze drinker a good indication of AF strength. Failing that a little hydrometer is useful- they are easily smashed though Are you in the Shire for a while yet?
