I spotted this rather pretty little wooden sailing barge the other day down at Broadness Harbour which is a strange little creek downstream of the Dartford crossing on the Thames. Its on the swanscombe peninsula which is due to be redeveloped into a huge pleb theme park. So this old boat will be bulldozed I expect. I'm a bit tempted to get some proper photos of it before it gets binned. Not aware of having seen a wooden one before. Certainly not on the Thames just metal ones. bargemast can you confirm its Dutch and what type it is ? Its beautiful. It looks vaguely OK from that angle but half of the port side is missing it is definitely a wreck..

Looks similar yes. Next time I'm down there I will get more pictures.
Eta I think its quite likely it was a yacht because it has a quality cabin which at some stage must have had some nice scuttles or portholes. Now all removed obviously.

Some very nice details to this old boat I reckon it is a yacht. Beautiful woodwork teak everywhere ££££ Engine in it looked to be a 4 I would suspect a Mercedes unit probably but difficult to tell and awkward to get a photo of. Teak laid decks on top of the cabin

I went inside the wreck today (all muddy from being on tidal water) and there was a sign "the difference between men & boys is the price of their toys". An appropriate sign on such an expensive looking boaty boat ! This sign (6"x4") is now mine all the decent bits have been stripped off the boat ages ago. It had the feel of once having been a seriously nice boat. Rigging And lee board winch cables all stainless. There was some thick stainless steel wire rope about 13mm diameter which seemed to be related to the lee boards or possibly the mast winch. There is a stunning teak ladder in that forepeak. Its miles from anywhere. There are one or two occupied boats and they have road access but it is via security barrier.

Teak laid decks on top of the cabin I looked at these photos with tears in my eyes, what a terrible shame that such a once very beautiful boat came to such a bad ending. It's definitely a Botteryacht, with her low stern (to pull the nets in). The engine could very well be a 4 cylinder Mercedes of the OM 636 type 40Hp and virtually indistructible, they were very popular boat engines, and there are still many around, I had one in my little Tjalk "Libertas" too. Peter.

I call that a great lack of respect for the old girl Because I'm an honest person, I have to admit that I would probably have done the same, if I'd had the opportunity, and if the climing in wouldn't have been to difficult for me. Peter.

Peter. There were signs that the last occupiers had a baby. Dolls and things. Seems a bit odd to leave them behind but I suspect there is some sort of sad relationship breakdown story to that boat. I'm sure its man/woman problems which cause a lot of trouble with boats. Only the other day I was in the shed at Bell weir boats looking for an oil pressure gauge for Mouse and the bloke on there was explaining that people divorce or split up all the time so there are always boats available and always people (usually single blokes I expect) looking to buy boats. It is the remains of an extremely nice vessel. A work of art at the end of the day. But its wood. I would not want a wood boat would you?

If I were magnetman, I would go there again to have another (but this time really good) look around that beautiful wreck.
As after reading the sign you've nicked of her, I think that her owner must have been a person of a certain wealth, and she could have been ballasted with gold bars, as they take a lot less space then steel, and it would have been a very good investment, looking at how much the price of gold has gone up.
I must still have a few golden coins somewhere (but where is the question) they wheren't solid gold though as their inside was made of chocalate.
Peter.

Speaking of respect I think whoever cut the bowsprit off was proper rude So unnecessary. Taking a little sign is for a souvenir cutting the bowsprit off is nasty. I expect it must have had something valuable made of bronze on the end.
