I like the idea of compost loos, but I'm yet to be convinced that they are a good idea on boats. It takes quite a while for poop to turn in to compost. Real compost loos have a large poo container that doesn't need emptying very often and that gives the poo time to break down and turn into harmless compost. The size of compost loo that you can fit on a boat doesn't have the space or time to convert poo to compost. The product you end up with in a boat composting loo is not compost it is desiccated shit.
The last time I needed a new loo I visited the 'Airhead' dealership and they showed me one they had fitted in a day boat. Inside the boat was no smell. The toilet has a fan that draws air out to keep smells out of the cabin and dry the shit, but this results in being able to smell shit outside the boat. I wouldn't want to moor next to someone with an Airhead. It was also uite big compared to a cassette and stupid expensive for what seemed like a simple piece of kit.
There is also the problem of disposal. What you are disposing of is not compost it is just dried human shit, so if you want to sty within the law it limits your options a bit. There was a guy on CWDF before that used to claim it was fine to just dump it in hedgerows but didn't accept that this was just fly tipping. CRT might say stick it down the Elsan, but will they keep on thinking that after a few get blocked? Is putting human waste in a wheelie bin ok? Cn I empty my cassette into the bins when I'm not near an Elsan?

It's amazing how conservative a lot of boaters are, especially when it comes to toilet habits. The things that I like about compost loos is that I don't have to arrange my schedule around visiting elsans and its doing something productive with your shit. Oh by the way they don't smell when you seperate the solids from the liquids. Give me a break! Are you seriously going to try to convince people that shit doesn't stink? Whilst dehydrated feces are much less odorous than non-dehydrated feces, taking a poop in a bucket without mixing in the urine does not immediately dehydrate the poop, nor does it make it smell any better. I can see where a system like Peter has would vent the smell outside and also aid in the dehydration process but just shitting in a bucket will result in a bucket of smelly shit. On encountering a particularly 'up her own arse' woman, my ex missus would say "I bet her shit doesn't stink".

Cn I empty my cassette into the bins when I'm not near an Elsan? It composts down quicker than you would think 3-6 months if the conditions are right. In the set up I've made I should be able to store about 12 months worth. So by the time I've filled the last bucket the first should be compost. I agree about the commercial units being stupid exspensive for what they are, this one cost me about £50 so good value I reckon. I like the idea of making a gasifier and running a Diesel engine off it. But we'll see.

When your sitting on 12 months of shite awaiting it turning into compost a calendar is essential

Give me a break! Are you serious... On encountering a particularly 'up her own arse' woman, my ex missus would say "I bet her shit doesn't stink". I went home and said to my wife, down the pub they all reckon the milkman has made love to every woman in our road apart from one. She said I bet it's that stuck-up Phyllis at Number 5.

Can't believe how many people have posted in this thread, that they wouldn't be able to wipe there bum with paper without getting shit on themselves. All I'm saying is they can't have had very good potty training.

If I was doing a complete bathroom refit i might consider one, but then again, with four people living on board and two of them being sprogs who use copious reams of toilet paper, I cant see where I would be able to store all the cack/paper/sawdust while it decays

Yea it's a different situation with four people especially children, I'm just bored of planing my cruising around where the elsan points are.
