Main engine plus generator is the way to go definitely. The main engine is for pushing the boat along. Generator is for what it says on the tin. A bit of solar isn't a bad idea although I'm not personally a fan of a lot of solar on the top of a canal boat. I also think a bit of wind power is worthwhile if you are in an exposed location. I can not visualise Mr Stabby mooring but if its windy I think there would be an option to stick a turbine on a land-mounted scaff pole thereby reducing the noise nuisance. Its mainly vibration down the pole. If you could find a decent unit (a lot of rubbish out of china unfortunately) might be worth a go. kris mentioned a VAWT vertical unit a while back which looks quite interesting. From kraut land. Obviously would be nice if there were some UK made options. I have Aerogen 6 and a 2nd hand Leading Edge in a locker waiting to be installed when I get out of the urban canyons. Both UK made Horizontal turbines. Aerogens are no longer manufactured which is a shame because they are excellent equipment. Very high quality.
