Have to say I agree with Nick, buy the best you can afford and make sure it really is a pure sine wave. An Automatic will run quite happily on a good sine wave inverter so long as it is powerful enough and the batteries will supply the power. Hence Nick suggestion run the engine or generator for the time it take to heat the water.
Go for the best you can afford

Very Sorry about that Smileypete ......... That'l teach me to use my memory instead of going back and checking It was Jenlyn that said he'd installed one although he was a Victron fan and had been impressed and canaldweller who had a smaller model and was happy. Sorry to have put your name to it inadvertently ...... again apologies

No problems at all. Looking at the manual for the inverter from Photonic Universe, it appears to have automatic N-E bonding on it's output which is a nice touch, a socket tester would also confirm this.

Thanks for the link - also on their website is this one www.sunshinesolar.co.uk/index.php?app=gbu0&ns=prodshow&ref=C300012&sid=95x2a15l84nh14b4pxvy8rq017lpbszm - same spec I think (with added ce marking) but a little heavier and with the free remote on/off switch I'm tempted... but have Nick's comments ringing through my ears/burning through my eyes... I HATE not knowing what to do... my brain is saying "just get the mastervolt" but my pocket is saying "you bought a dualit kettle for 90 quid and it still takes 3 mins to boil - like the sainsburys 9 quid one did before it!"...
